I posted this picture in the Military Surplus forum last year, but not too many people were interested. Anyway, it is of #5 from the nine 1911s tested by the military before adoption. I also have pictures of a bunch of experimental 1911 models. I took these photos at the museum, and I highly recommend going there!

This one was made out of Brastile by the Springfield Armory. I think it was to cut down costs and make some more resistant to rust than steel.

Way cool. I bet these guns are pretty much priceless.

Just when it seems as if the current makers have tried out every concievable configuration of the 1911, you discover something "new" (that is actually old). Why not bring back the "brastil" alloy 1911 frame? SUre, now we have stainless, but i think a brasstille fromed 1911 would be unique & cool (heck, if they can sell Damascus steel 1911 parts, then why not brasstille?).

I visited there a couple of times as a teenager in the 60s and still have fond memories of those visits. Highly recommended. Another must see museum for the gun nut is the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, Wyoming - just east for a Yellowstone vacation - plan on two days and there's RV parking. :)
Adios,
Bob
