Benchrest and Scope recommendations

What is the best type or preferred type of set up form benchrest rifle shooting? Sandbags or machined bench rests? I want to start shooting benchrest and possible go into competition. For practicing could i just use any type of sandbag from say Lowe's or Home Depot or should i spend the money to get a decent suede or microfiber sandbag? I'm going to be mainly shooting with .22's and possibly a .30-.30. Also any recommendations for resonably price scopes that are worth their price?

As for the 30-30, I'm pretty sure you'll find no-one shoots it in benchrest competition.
