I have a Vang comped 870 with MMC sights that I would like to have a rail installed on just in front of the rear sight so I can install my Eotech 512 on it. I figured it would be a simple matter of finding a rail the right size and having the reciever drilled and tapped. I use this gun mostly with slugs for bear protection. The MMC sights are ghost ring and their ok but I like Eotechs. I would like to be able to keep the sights as a back up system. I have a GG&G mount for the Eotech so its easy on and off. Am I missing anything? thanks in advance.

yes. I just help a guy do this on a 870 20ga. But I will have to admit the better option would be the convert-A-mont base that weaver offers. You can find them on sale for under $30.00-40.00 and they are quick and much simpler.
i do question if your ghost frt will block the view thru eotech?

I have a side saddle and that blocks mounts that use the cross pins in the reciever.

Will if you do drill the top of the receiver you must be carefull to make sure it stays on centerline and the holes are drill straight & perpendicular. We screwed up ours and had to take it to a professional ;)
We ran into some many problems mainly w/geting this started ( holes drilled) that we ended up take the torn down 870 to a machine shop and they did the work, plus tap the holes for about $25.00 dollars plus tax. It was drop off and pickup within one day. The plain weaver base from warne cost about 35 dollars or maybe less. We also had to shorten one of the screw by a hair, it was bottoming out :(
Since this shotgun has seen he field, I can't comment on how good it will hold up. But we did use red locite due to the recoil of the heavy slugs. That would be my only other concern with installingl a drill and tap base vrs one of the quicker side mounts.
Compared to the cost of the convert-A-mount, the convert-Amount is a simpler option.Btw: You can easily relocate the saddle to the stock or get a speedfeed and still come out ahead as far as I'm concern.
Also if you have a true Ghost Sights have you figure out what you are going todo with the rear sight? I would assume it will have to come off for sure. I do think remington did over weaver models 870 in the police series with the heavy parkerizing. If you could find one of these and give it a try that might be the best thing. Or see if you can find out what base they used on them.

Thanks I plan on having a smith do it. I have a speed feed too but I don't want to give up my side saddle for muscle memory and training reasons. Thanks for the info. Also its a registered short barrel shotgun so I want to stay with it.

I would go with a saddle mount. They sit over the receiver and use bolts that replace the trigger group pins. I have one on my 1187 and my Aimpoint has held zero for two turkey seasons. I use 3.5 inch Hevishot mags so the mount and my shoulder take a pounding!

I can't because I have a side saddle that precludes this options. Thanks though. I am looking into a KAC rail but I don't have any pics so I am not sure if it will work for me.
