Still got the original wooden grips...changed those as soon as I shot my first 158 grain. ;f

That's what the guy sold me when I asked for a good home defense round.

The folder is a Mini-14, it has a Swift Firefly on it. The 10/22 Target has a Swift 1.5 X 4.5 X 32. I'd like to get something bigger for the 10/22.

Man those grips look awesome!

The poor boy's trigger job is a must do on any SA Ruger. It takes about 30 seconds and makes a world of difference. I had my SBH for all of about an hour before I did it.

My first firearm purchase ever was a 4" stainless GP100 in 1989. Here are a couple of my SP101s. Both wear Badger grips. The one with boot grips is 9mm and the full gripped DAO is .357 mag.

Bullman,

Thanks. The grips on the 9mm are rosewood Badger Custom boot grips. The grips on the .357 and rosewood Badger Custome full grips. Obviously, I really like Jim Badger's work. The grips feel good and make the SP101 point well.

jmb,

just to let you know, you just sold some of badgers grips. They are the only ones that actually make super blackhawk hunter grips (super frame, but round trigger guard). They would be a perfect Christmas gift for my Dad and his SBH hunter.

BTW those grips do look sweet on your SP.

I am currently in the process of price shopping for a new SP101 with 3" barrel chambered in .357 magnum and plan on making a purchase soon.

For traditional OWB belt carry, do you recommend the fullsize Badger grips over the boot grips? I'd like to get an idea on how much the larger grips help with comfort when shooting full-power .357 magnum loads.

Also, who sells the different color panel inserts for the Ruger OEM rubber grips... Lett?

You have no clue, my brother and I bought our Dad the SBH for no other reason than he needed a gun since he hadn't had one in about 10 years and we wanted to give him something to go shooting with us.

It's the least we could do considering he sold off his guns to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table.

jmb79
11-29-2005, 18:17
Catbird,

I shoot only .357 mag. from my .357 mag SP101. If I want to shoot .38 spc. I shoot my wife's .38 SP101. The reason I tell you this is so you know that I take grips selection seriously. I have tried several grips with my .357 SP101 and there are some that are less comfortable than others.

That said, I have tried both the full length Badgers and the boot length Badgers on the .357 and found that the full length grips are necessary in order for me to get back on target quickly between shots. With the boot grip Badgers the recoil/kick from .357 rounds can cause my grip on the gun to shift just enough that I have to reposition my hand. This increases the time it takes to get back on target. With the full length grips this does not happen.

Note that I have the Badger boot grips on my 9mm SP101 and they work great on that revolver.

So, to answer your questions, I would recommend the full size grips if you plan to shoot .357 from your .357 SP101.

Also, I believe you are correct that Lett makes grip panel inserts for Rugers.

I understand. Thanks.

Like the other person said, I noticed the rake/angle of the frame-to-grip was pretty extreme based on my experience. I was a little concerned about that, too.

Here's a pic I "borrowed" from the SmithandWessonForum. I've been admiring this gun and its grips.

I just gave my Dad the Badge Custom Grips I ordered for him. His gun look mean as all getout now. I got him the Black wood ones. Not only does it have fingergrooves, but he can actually get his pinky on the grip now. I will take a pic soon. It's a Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter in .44mag with a Millet red dot sight (silver to match the stainless gun), poor man trigger job, and now those black wood finger grooved Badger grips. I am almost jealous. That thing is BAD and will string shots together at 50+ feet, easy.

Catbird
12-10-2005, 16:17
Since my above post, I placed an order with Lett grips for these silver/black panel inserts for the stock SP101 rubber grips. While I like the looks of the wood finger groove grips made by Badger and others, I prefer the feel of rubber. I'm probably going to keep these on for the time being.

Why not, if you like the feel of rubber, and like badger finger groove grips, compromise and get some Hogue rubber grips for your SP, I love the ones I have on my GP, and the the SP grips are a slimmer profile than those.

I put some hogues on my GP-100 (now my dad's). The stock grips fel awkward, the rubber finger-grooved grips from hogue feel great. Much more natural.

I have a stainless Ruger Vaquero chambered in .45 Colt w/ 5 1/2" barrel. Although it doesn't have the history and "romance" of my nickel Colt Single Action Army chanbered in .45 Colt w/ 5 1/2" barrel, it's a much better performer, IMO.

Thanks Bullman. Save those pennies! If the local shops are any indication there are plenty of Vaqueros (new and used) to go around. They really are a joy to shoot. At least the .45 LC version is. I've had guns that I was more accurate with, but I've never had a one that was more enjoyable.

By the way, after thinking about it some more I remembered that I bought those grips out of Brownell's catalog, so I went back and looked 'em up: The manufacturer is "All-America," and the grips are called "Elegant Pewter Grips." Mine are gold (duh), but they're also available in silver. For the Vaquero and/or Blackhawk. Oh, and there's a Colt SAA (and clones) version. List price is $69.95 for gold, or $59.95 for silver (though I got mine for $45.73 because I get a business discount from Brownells). So they ain't exactly cheap.

I was thinking about getting the ejector rod housing and maybe the cylinder gold plated to match, but then realized it wouldn't be an exact match. Plus, I'm not sure just how much I like these grips. ***shrug***

This is an old picture of my first Ruger pistol, a Mark II. I have since done trigger and accuracy work, added a Red Dot, and replaced the stock grips with target grips. In addition to this pistol, I own a Mini-14 and a 10/22.

I just added a QP&R Blued steel ejector housing and Crescent shaped ejector rod to it. I also have Pachmayr grips for it but I think it is more Picture worthy in the original rosewood ones.

Old modle 44 Deerstalker I picked up for 125.00 at a estate auction last summer. I'd say it hadn't seen more than 100rds needles to say I got one hell of a deal on this one. ;)
[url][IMG]http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c296/gelhard/Ruger44Carbine1.jpg
Modle 77 in 223 rem that I pout a synthetic Stock on. This was another great deal from the same estate auction that I got the 44 at. I got this one for 225.00. I've tried to buy many guns at auctions before but they always went higher than new. At this one they never advertised the guns and left them for last and there was nobody left and I got some of the deals of a life time. At the same auction I picked up a S&W model 14 for 125.00 ;z

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y115/Catbird1/72f79d69.jpg i have this very same gun.its slightly bulkier than a SSA or clone its also stronger in that it can be used with rather stout 45 colt loads and not restricted to cowboy loads..for this reason i think the origonal vaquero and the origonal black hawk superblackhawks will be the ones sought after by those that know.

Here's my Ruger SRH 454 Casull that I had shortened to 4.25"...

I have both a 7.5" and a shortened 4.25" SRH 454 Casull's...

I installed Crimson Trace grips on the shortened SRH. I find them to be the most punishing grips I have used due to the bulge on the grip where the top rear screw hole is. I have now ground down the bulge but haven't had a chance to try it out yet. The bulge would hit me in the first joint of my thumb and it was weeks before the pain went away.

I am shooting 405gr Beartooth WLNGC's @ 1200fps out of the 4.25" barrel so there is a substancial amount of recoil to begin with. I installed the CT grips because I use this handgun for my wilderness carry gun for bear protection when I work in remote wilderness areas here in Canada.

GP-100 .357, 3-inch regular barrel, grit-blasted with fine Aluminum Oxide grit. Stock grips with plastic inserts made for the SP-101 revolver, top surfaces lightly roughed-up for a more secure grip and less reflection; bottom of the grooves left polished.

Now, that's a nice looking revolver! The plastic grip panels really blend in with the all-business appearance. I like it.

Actually I wear E.A.R. electronic hearing aids that lower all loud sounds like gun fire to below 85 decibals they also amplify sounds which is awesome when I am in the bush.

I can hear the minutest sound with these on.
