Buffer Retainer and Retainer Spring Assembly

My Colt AR locked up at the range the other day when the buffer breached the buffer retainer and went forward too far (into the back of the hammer). I have found the buffer retainer and spring in the receiver, but I need confirmation as to how they go in.

The buffer retainer was bent, so I bought a new one from Brownells and the spring is fine. Surely the buffer doesn't just rest on the spring in the buffer retainer hole, does it? That doesn't seem very stable to me. What is the proper way to do this?

Buffer retainer is held in place by the buffer tube. You will need to remove the buttstock and buffer tube, install the spring and buffer retainer and then replace the buffer tube.
If you have a fixed buttstock, just screw the tube in until it is tight. If you have an adjustable buttstock, screw the tube in until it catches the edge of the buffer retainer, then lock it in place with the buffer tube castle nut. You should have a carbine buttstock wrench for this.

you could run without it...less chance of it breaking off again if its not there.
