View Full Version : Red or blue Loctite for front sight
Which do you prefer? I have used red in the past but someone told me if you ever think you might need to switch them out again to use blue. Suggestions??????

Red. Blue sometimes has the tendency to shoot itself loose.

My new sites came with a tube of red. I have a tube of blue already so I thought about this for a while before installing them. I was scared to use the red in case I didn't get them centered correctly. However, I didn't want to have to re-install them after they worked loose.
In the end, I am still not sure that they are centered perfectly or not, but I did use red so I am crossing my fingers that I did it right.

I have installed and removed hundreds of sights with both red an blue. Both work but in general I use red.

...and one I have been wondering and maybe others would benefit from too.
How do you remove sites that have been installed with Red loctite without damaging the sites or the gun?

From a friend:
Eddie,
The answer to "how does one remove a sight that's been installed with red Loctite" is "exactly the same way as you'd remove a sight that'd been installed with blue Loctite. Haven't installed as many as Matt, but have installed several dozen, using red (271) Loctite. They just unscrew, without heating, and I never had a screw break or a sight damaged.

Thank you both for your input. I hope I don't have to take em off but at least I know I can if I have to now.
Thanks for all the help. Some very good information shared.

what about using red loctite 262? 262 is what Glockmeister sent with my Meprolights about a year ago.
We re-seated the Dawson fiber-optic front sight on the G34 this week. It was installed with #271 Red Locktite. Using the Dawson tool the screw came out with no heat and moderate force. Used brake cleaner on the screw before re-installing with more Red. No problem.

You can't just go by red vs blue. 242 is blue and is a medium strength thread locking compound. Any low to medium strength Loctite compound is considered removable. 262 is red and is a medium to high strength thread locking compound. 271 is also red and is a high strength compound. Any medium to high strength compound is considered to be permanent. With the surface areas involved on items such as GLOCK front sight screws, the "permanent" doesn't really apply. I find 262 is a good compromise for front sight screws.

I've always used blue.
Haven't had one come loose yet.
