View Full Version : RRA AR15....or wait for the XCR???
I'm looking for some honest opinions here, as I'm finally in the market for three or four new firearms that I never could afford as a student.
I'd always planned to purchase a RRA, but very recently, I'd been made aware of Robar and their products. In fact, I'm ordering a VEPR-K 7.62 in the VERY near future.
I've always wanted to own a genuine AR15, but after seeing the previews of the XCR I've got to admit-- this thing just looks BETTER. If all of thei promises hold true, then there'd be absolutely no point in me purchasing an AR...now, or ever.
What would you folks do? Order the RRA now, or wait a few months and see how the XCR makes out?

The XCR is unproven, and I personally don't think there is anything wrong with the AR-15 design. I'd get the RRA.
If it was me making the decision, I'd get an AR and bunches of ammo with money saved over the XCR, and shoot that ammo while others are shooting nothing, ie waiting for Robarms to deliver...

RRA NOW!
Go ahead and get the RRA. Once you buy one more will follow. That's just the way it works for some reason.

look at the M96, I was interested in the XCR until I read a bunch of reviews of the M96.

I would not touch an XCR at this point. The AR and AK both are global standards with LOTS of parts, service and accessories available. The XCR is made by one samll company in the US only with NO parts service or accessories available. I am not saying that is not a good gun, in fact I think it is great. It just doesn not have enough market support at present for me to consider buying one. Plus it is much more expensive than either of the the other two.

Ok, thanks for the advice, folks. I figured the same...get the RRA now, and wait until the XCR is proven as a reliable platform.
But it just looks REALLY interesting. Time will tell.

for $1655.89 i would rather build/buy 2 AR-15's in stead of the XCR... BUT if the XCR would sell for about $750, i might give it a try....

Is it just me, or someone else notice something wrong with the pictures from this page?

The flip down front sights are reversed in a couple of the pictures.
Looks like someone was extremely careless in configuring the weapon for a couple of the shots.
I hope they will pay more attention in designing and building the weapon...

Give me a break, that is total BS. I know plenty of Marines and Contractors who have and do use M16/M4/AR15 rifles in combat without one little issue to speak of. In fact, none of the fellas I know even mentioned a reliability issue with their weapon. They trusted them 100%. It's a non-factor.
That has honestly got to be one of the most ignorant postings in regards to the AR design I have ever heard. No offense, of course.

Good catch, I wonder if those are actual pictures or 'artistic marketing images' a la Springfield Armory.

AR's simply require more maintenance than a gas piston design. I do not think that a combat rifle should have to be cleaned once a day when subjected to combat conditions.
A mag change does not count as special "maintenance" for an AR. You have no idea what you're talking about.
It took 50 years to refine the AR into its present form. Its nearly right now. No matter how well designed the XCR is it will need to be refined. I agree with TED and would select the AR for the reasons he cited.

Rereading my previous posts I let this one get out of control way too fast and said somethings that were unnecessary and contentious. Sorry about that.
RRA would be a great choice for the going the AR route. However, having had a quality AR, I must say I think the XCR is worth the wait.

Are you saying that your buddies in the sand box clean their ARs only as often as a AK needs to be cleaned? Are you saying that when the military investigated all of the alleged failings of the M4 after the early reports came in that they did not find that the people with no complaints were ones that cleaned their AR's daily?
I do not hate the AR, in fact, I will be buying an old school 20" A2 govt style after the XCR gets in. I just really hate to see people dis the XCR based on a false romanticization of the AR's military history that I once bought into myself.
Nobody is "dissing" the XCR, but it IS NOT PROVEN!
As far as the Marines I know cleaning their weapon goes, sure they did clean their weapons. I know for a fact that they went through thousands of rounds in between cleanings at times. It's not like they are walking along on patrol and say, "Hey guys, cover me while I clean up my weapon."
They cleaned their weapons when they had time, which wasn't all too often.
FWIW, AK's will jam if not properly maintained. Any gun will jam if you abuse it and neglect to "maintain" it. To say otherwise is a lie.

The M-16 got a bad reputation in the early days of Viet-Nam. It jammed due to improper ammo. That was corrected in short order. The other issue was many WW II folks thought bigger was better. That was a hold over from the black power days. They touted the 45 ACP over the 9MM and were sure the .223 was inferior to the .308. Notice that everyone, including the former East Block, has adopted a .22 caliber assault rifle round and a 9MM handgun round. Unfortunately, old myths die hard.

...except for the direct gas impingement.
I'd recommend a www.pof-usa.com AR.

Yeah, I just like saying "impingement." I might get one just so I can say "impingement" all the time. :clown:
Is the XCR even out/available. It had been so long since I heard anything, I thought that project fell through.
If you really want an impingement system look at POF or wait in line for the Sig 556. If it were me, I'd forget about the over priced impingement systems and just get the RRA. impingement impingement.........IMPINGEMENT!!

I hate to impinge on your rights to say "impingement" but I think that you are impinging on the rights of others to be impingment free when you use the word impingement recklessly. :rollsmiley:
Hey, it even rhymes!
This has to be the oldest thread resurrection I have ever seen! (As a preacher I like to use the word resurrection.)
