So, I'm seeing this new load from Fed's American Eagle, featuring a 50 grain hollowpoint at 3400 fps - I've only had limited experience with AE in a couple of different calibers.....is the consensus of GT'ers that AE in general is not a load that you could trust your life to? Again, my experience with this stuff is limited, but it's always shot well and seemed like a decent, clean line of ammo.
Roughly 7 bucks a box for 20 rounds of hollowpoint seems like a pretty difficult deal to beat for a guy like me in suburbia. Any thoughts?

I am sure it is decent ammo, but probably better suited to varmints than humans. Best bet for a self defense round out of an AR is good ole M193 ball, a good soft point, or a nice heavy 75 or 77 grainer.

I tend to agree wih the above poster, but I did buy a bulk box (larger square box of ten smaller white 20-round boxes) of this stuff to try out. I've yet to shoot it, but I noticed while loading mags that it has crimped primers, which is different than the other American Eagle 50-grain HP load. I'd say either they are trying to standardize the primed brass they currently use for several different loads, or this load is intended for autoloaders/ARs. If the latter is true, then it might be less of a varmint HP than other similar offerings, and perhaps more suitable for defensive use.
Sounds like some testing is needed. Who wants to do it?
Step right up, don't be shy, nobody lives forever...

I have run 600 rounds of AEBP223G through my RRA mid length with good results. I have been buying it in 200 rd packs for $50. The ranges I shoot at don't allow fmj so all I shoot hp's. This ammo would not be my first choice for defense but at the same time I think it would work just fine.

Agreed. Also, depending upon one's situation, ball ammo or even soft points might have too much penetration. Remember, you are responsible for every projectile launched and where it ends up; regardless of your justification for shooting in the first place.
