I bought a m77 .308 for plinking with and hunting. I have a Rem PSS in the safe but it's a pain to "Fun" shoot with. I really didn't expect alot from the m77 just a 100yds just rifle for deer.

What I Bought was a older model NIB synthetic m77 with the skeletal stock style and a 3-9X32 simmons scope.

My results:

At 100 yds with primo match 168's I got one hole. 3 rnds I thought I only had one hit although they were so tight you could only see one maybe .40 cal hole. 5 rnds and I notice a slightly larger less circlularhole although still one hole. 1/2inch at most.

With 180gr SP it opened up to just about 1".

With military 147gr nato it went to 2+" and was no longer one whole.

At 200yds steel targets with 168match I was shooting 1.25"-2" groups
With 180 SP, 2" consistantly
With cheap military I was always able to hit the 3" steel.

These were done over two days with the rifle cleaned at the end of the day. Each day was about 40rnds 168gr, 40 rnds of 180gr and 100, rnds of 147gr ball.

The 147gr ball was fired last and therefore fired through a dirtier barrel then the others.

Over all I am super impressed. My only faults are 2.

1. 3-9X32 simmons scope. I want a much higher power scope. Something in the 16+ power range. Maybe as high as a 8-32X44or50mm

2. Trigger. YUCK! All my shots were sandbagged, I could have never done it standing with the stock trigger. It's gritty, draggy, and rough. With a 7+ pound break. With a light crisp smooth trigger This rifle could and would be a super rifle the MAY rival my PSS.

Although the PSS has it beat for barrel cooling, but not for firing dirty. The PSS requires cleaning every 5-12rnds during firing or the groups open up drastically. The PSS also has a much better custom tuned 12 ounce, crisp trigger and a 20X power scope.

The M77 shot consistaly with a cool barrel with miniscule change with a hot barrel. And the whole time without cleaning til after the day's end. I could have sat there and shot the 3" steel target all day even with mil ball ammo.

Sounds like a typical Ruger!

Wonder how hard the triggers are to improve on them.. I've been looking at a Frontier Rifle for a while... well drooling over one ;f

I have actually found several aftermarket triggers for the M77 through Brownell's. Went out again today and shot 150-175 yard shots standing. 4rnds fired, 3 to the heart of the deer silloette and one to the head. MAJOR difficult with the stock 7.36# trigger, rain and fog on a mountain side. Would have and was cake with a 2.5# trigger like my AR has.

I just have to figure which trigger is the best value for the least money and doesn't require a gunsmith to install.

I've got a Ruger 77 stainless compact in .308 that I bought about a year before the Frontier came out. I actually thought the trigger was pretty smooth and not overly heavy. I had heard that Ruger was improving some things, including triggers. This is my first bolt gun with a scope, and I cannot make any positive comments about my accuracy as of yet. Last week at the range, I fired two rounds from the prone at 50 yards that a dime could cover. I moved back to 100 and my group opened up. When I got home, I had to re-tighten the scope rings. I need to invest in some Loctite before wasting any more ammo. Other that that, its a great little gun. I just wish it had iron sights.

I have an M77MKII .270 that I plan on getting a Timney trigger for, because unfortunately, I am also aware of their California approved laywer-designed 40 pound trigger pulls.
