thinking of getting one, but whats a good price? i want to get a new stock, make the streight bolt into a more typical bolt, and maybe slap a new barrel on and use it for hunting. anyone have any information? resources? where can i get the rifle cheap in Louisiana. any info helps. Thanks
i'd reccomend a persian mauser they run around $200 and are getting to be VERY rare, they are also one of the most accurate of the 8mm's out there.

I bought a German K98k last year from AIM, with several intact Nazi markings and am very happy with it. It is an RC (Russian capture) with a shelac finish on the stock and had what is called a "frosted bore" but with very strong lands and grooves.
It shoots very well for a rifle that is more than 60 years old and been through gosh knows what. I'd buy one again.
Now, if you have the money you can get a really nice German K98k from here Empire Arms (http://64.82.96.51). Everyone who buys from him has nothing but good things to say. The rifles may cost a little more, but they are worth it.
i love that round, i have 4 guns that shoot it.
a turk 38, a k98 GI bringback, a hakim, and an fn-49.
the czech vz-24 or 24/47 is also a nice choice for a bolt action.

The Yugoslavian M48's are quite nice as well.
For best condition, the Yugo M48 Mausers are hard to beat. Excellent to like new rifles can be had for as little as $150.
For historic value, the German K98 rifles captured by Russia are a good choice. Most have the Nazi markings intact. The bores are often pitted but still shootable.
It's cheaper to buy a Charles Daly Mauser at Wal-Mart than to modify a military rifle into a sporter.
The yougo mauser has a slightly shorter action and is a little harder to find aftermarket stocks for.Midway has at least one from Boyds. Unless you are planning to do the work yourself or have a friend to do it it might be cheaper to buy a ruger m77. I have 3 mausers and love them I don't want to discurage you from buying a mauser just check out your options.

I love my yugoslovian mauser straight bolt that I got for $85.00 at a gun show a while ago. I wanted a good cheap rifle for a project and This was a great pick. It was built on german machinary for yugo's After I got the rifle I figured I was going to Chop off 4" off the barrel to get rid of the bad beat up crown and that 4" or so of the end of the barrel where all the rods have cut up the rifling. now that rifle shoots great groups out to 200 yards and When you look into ammo get about 2000 rounds of the Romanian stuff that is out there now that stuff is great. If you handload for hunting us the rem core lokts. I have about 500 on hand from a action I got them at and love them they really hold together and open up on the big game
The picture shown here is before I did the cut and recrown (ALL with hand tools a drill press and a torch) drill press was used to reset the fron sight

And after This thing is a great little handy rifle I got the idea and the rough "how to" from a magazine called backwoodsmen. Note the wide sling and Choped bayonet lug (I had a extra one around that I used instead of cutting the one that came with the rifle

I found a Yugo M48A at a local flea market for $175, and it looked like it was new in box. But no box.
I have fired 10 rounds through it, just to sight it in, and am WAY impressed with its function and accuracy.
It has a BENT BOLT, by the way, and the ammo is CHEAP! I got 900 rounds of Yugo (1954) on strippers for $59.95 + S&H. Less than 9cts per round.

Be sure to clean that barrel the same day you shoot it,if you're shooting any type of surplus ammo. You could end up with a pitted bore in a matter of days if you dont.

You can get an authentic K98 in good shooting condition for < $300. You now own a piece of history and have fun shooting as well.

My original K98 was made in 1939 if I remember right. I'm not sure since I'm on campus and away from my locker at the moment. It has all matching #'s and it shoots a nice pattern/group I havnt run any of the handloads I made for my short Yugo through it yet but that will change next week now that I think about it. Maybe if I find a cheapo Turk this weekend at the local show I might get it and cut it down to 16" and see about putting a cool sight set on it, Make another tack driver out of it.
