View Full Version : Anyone try a 9MM Heavy buffer ? GregG17 10-04-2005, 17:47 I was wondering if anyone here has a 9mm buffer in their AR-15, and what experiences you might have had with them?? Skintop911 10-04-2005, 18:38 Works good in the SMG. ;e JWP 10-04-2005, 22:56 have aac csmkII in 10.5 9mm and 11.5 223 for m16, was unreliable w/o the heavier buffer with a collapsable stock GregG17 10-05-2005, 09:28 I have a bushmaster m4grey with a 16in barrel and was wondering if it would make a big differece in the recoil? Eric911 10-05-2005, 12:32 I have two heavy buffers that I am using. One is a Colt 9mm and the other is DPMS Counterweight. The recoil difference is minimal. Remember, we're dealing with a .223, so there isn't a lot of recoil to begin with. In a 16" semi-auto they don't do a heck of a lot. They can be beneficial in full-auto fire (can help reduce the cyclic rate) and when using unusually short .223 barrels. There are some reports of .223 action springs not fitting over the heavy buffers. Mine have worked, but they have been tight. Both have functioned fine in my carbines. Owell I'm going to be building a sbr sometime one less part I'll need, thanks Eric. Arminius 10-05-2005, 13:45 From what I´ve read at ARfcom, there are CAR buffer, H buffers, then 9 mm buffers. The heavier ones, which are claimed to be superior and smoother shootin´are approximately the same weight as a STANDARD RIFLE BUFFER!! ( I never understood in the first place, why a carbine with shorter buffer travel has to have a LIGHTER Buffer?!?! Even with a stronger spring, there should be a heavier buffer to slow things down ) What is the reason to not use a standard rifle buffer in a carbine, and have the weight of a 9 mm buffer??? Thanks for answering a potentially dumb question. H GregG17 10-05-2005, 14:11 What??? Eric911 10-05-2005, 14:26 What is the reason to not use a standard rifle buffer in a carbine, and have the weight of a 9 mm buffer??? It’s not a weight issue, but a size issue. There is a vast size difference between a carbine buffer and a rifle buffer. The carbine is shorter and is only for use in a collapsible stock. A rifle buffer will not work in collapsible stock. However, if you have a carbine size weapon with a fixed rifle stock, you would still use the rifle buffer in the fixed stock. Nothing wrong with using the 9mm heavy buffer, but just don't expect a massive change. I'm leaving mine in place. GregG17 10-05-2005, 14:37 Yeah AR's don't have much recoil to begin with just someone over at arf.com was talking how it's the next best thing since sliced bread, and how it really cut down the recoil no beggie, thanks for the heads up... Skintop911 10-05-2005, 21:56 Those of you running the bargain basement ammo, already a marginal performer, are asking for function issues when you add a heavier buffer and it's resultant effect on stroke velocity. Leave your guns alone. "Improvements", aren't, more often than not. Michigun 10-06-2005, 09:08 I’m running a Colt 9mm buffer with my carbine length gas system… it’s a 16” Bushmaster w/removable FH… I noticed a smoother shooting AR when I swapped out the standard buffer for the 9mm buffer. My set-up runs perfectly even with weak shooting Wolf .223 ammo. I like it & I’m keeping it. ^c GregG17 10-11-2005, 13:16 Got it in the mail saturday. I'll update once I try it out. c4igrant 10-11-2005, 13:55 For a carbine gas system I run an H3 buffer. In my mid length gas system I run the Enidine Hydraulic buffer. Both work VERY well with the Enidine being the smoothest shooting of all. There is ZERO bolt bounce with it. C4 http://www.gandrtactical.com/images/archive/Enidine%20buffer.JPG GregG17 10-13-2005, 20:42 I just put in my 9mm buffer. I'll let you'all know how it turns out...:) vBulletin® v3.7.3, Copyright ©2000-2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd. | ![]() |
