This is my baby:

I've been in love with the LMT MRP but I'll never spring for what they're askin. I was wondering what I'd need to put together my "dream upper" which would look something like this:
http://tinypic.com/e9ekxk.jpg
I know I'd have to have the F/H permenantly attached and that I'd need a low profile gas block. I'm just not sure which barrel and gas block would work...

Special thanks to Michigun for his beautiful AR pic;)

Couldn't you just wack the top off your front sight base and swap to the longer hand guards? Maybe hit the top with some cold blue but it doesn't have to be pretty if it's under the hand guards.
The FH only needs to be pinned if the barrel is under 16", is your dream upper a 14.5, 16, or a midlength of some kind? The barrel you have now is 16" right? Is it threaded or is that a set screw FH?

I forgot to mention that I don't want to change the upper I have, just put a new one together. She's all Colt, which in itself means nothing to some but I'd like to keep her as is. I'll eventually get another lower...and then another....

An acquaintance of mine has a Bushmaster upper set-up in a similar fashion to what you are describing. I believe he had the Bushy folks use the rifle-length YHM 4-rail FF tube and a 16" barrel to build his upper. It may take a couple of days to a week, but I'll try to get a picture of his weapon and post it.

The weapon I mentioned above is a Bushmaster Dissipator with the YHM 4-rail rifle-length FF tube, a fold-down front sight, GG&G rear, and a Burris 1.75-6x Electro-Dot on a Q-D scope base:

I may be the clueless one here (no surprise) but taht wickit-tactical carbeen - where's the front sight???? It's got a rear sight. Why bother if you gut no front sight? Or can you really shoot rear-sight only for close-up stuff if you maintain cheekweld???
Other than that, it looks pretty cool. Even from a guy who likes seeing a FST on a gun.

It appears to have a fold down front sight. Look at the gas block, you can see it in the down position, pointing toward the rear.

Where?
The original poster had one. This gun doesn't.

feetpiece, ADCO has been making an upper EXACTLY like that for a while now… a few months back they had a bunch already made up & you could have had one in just a few days… now they’re all gone & they’re building them as they’re ordered… no big deal though as you can still get one pretty fast.
I know ADCO starts with a 16” barrel w/a carbine length gas system… then they trim/grind down its original regular ‘ol front sight base/gas block so that a Daniel Defense 12.0 free-float tube will slide over it… then they cut down the barrel, rethread it & permanently attach a flashider so the overall length is the legal 16”… pretty simple.
If you can find a 14.5” barrel w/permanently attached FH all you’d have to do is just trim/grind down its front sight base/gas block & install your free-float tube.

Relax Dennis in MA, that's my AR... feetpiece just borrowed it to do a little "photo shopping" to show what it was that he's looking for... this is how that picture looked before feetpiece “photo shopped” it:

(FYI, if you stare at the bottom picture (AFTER the page has fully loaded for you) in feetpiece's 1st post here, you'll see what feetpiece did. ^c)

Thanks for the complement. ^c

I photoshopped the original to look like what I want to do. Michigun's AR is a Dissipator with a standard FSP and a threaded Phantom F/H.
Here is another look at what I'd like to do - again, it's photoshopped...
http://tinypic.com/ehb5h2.jpg
This upper has a 14.5 inch barrel with a KKF extended A2 F/H permenantly attached. I chopped the gas block down to look like a low profile gas block which would fit under a rifle length F/F rail.
What I'd like to know is which gas block and rail could be set up like this. Right now I'm thinking the Yankee Hill Low Profile G/B with a Troy MRF-R might work.
Edited to add:
Michigun, thanks for steering me to Adco - I found exactly what I was looking for in their gallery.

You must have posted this before you read my reply feetpiece...
By the way, the YHM free-float tube is one of the largest (if not THEE largest) out there so you wouldn't have to do a lot of trimming to get a standard FSB/GB under it.
FYI, those low profile gas blocks are really only for those that either can't or don't want to trim/grind down a standard FSB/GB.

The nice thing about that ADCO build is that it's actually a 15"-something barrel with a permanently attached short/standard A2 FH (16" overall giving you the longest barrel possible with the shortest FH that actually works pretty darn well)... you gain a little more velocity that way which is a good thing... of course they'll do you one up with the 14.5 & Phantom if ya really want that.

I was never really a fan of the Phantom until I saw yours;) That thing just looks mean. I plan on keeping my SOPMOD as is and this will just be my next AR. After this one it'll be an SPR, but that is way down the road.

The Phantom 5C2 is very useful too... I've muzzle poked 2 neighborhood dogs with it, thus far, that were getting into my trash cans at night. ;f
