View Full Version : New PM9, not happy
Well, i'm new to this board, wish i found it sooner.
I purchased a new PM9 2 weeks ago and took it to the range the next day after cleaning and lubing it. After the first shot it wouldn't go fully into battery. Next shot the same then again and again. So now I have a gun that won't go into battery 80% of the time. Only one feeds correctly out of every magazine.
I took it apart for my next trip to the range and polished the feed ramp. It didn't help at all. Another 100 rounds through it and same problems. Anyone else get one bad as me?
Stats:
100 rounds of Winchester white box FMJ
100 rounds of Remington UMC FMJ
50 rounds of Fiocchi FMJ
40 rounds of Federal Classic JHP

That's pretty bad. Sometimes you gotta put some rounds through it for it to be 100%, but sounds like something is broke in your gun. Send it back to Kahr.

i just made a thread about this the other day. I had the same problem with my new pm9, although polishing the feed ramp did help me a little bit. But my problem was that i had the old recoil spring that wasnt strong enough. I emailed kahr tech support with my problem and contact info, and they shipped a brand new spring no charge, it is longer and stronger than my old spring too.
You might have a crappy recoil spring. Ask kahr about it. :)

I have a few thousand rounds through my PM9 and only had a few problems. One thing I did notice about my PM9 was that it did not like Fiocchi ammo at all.
I would send it back to Khar. They will treat you right. The PM 9 is a good gun
Called Kahr, a new recoil spring is on the way along with recoil spring assembly, how that fixes it.

it should fix it. I fired another 75 rounds through mine today with the new spring and assembly, not one single FTB. Hope this helps ease your mind a little until your parts arrive. :)
I will be anxious to see if the new recoil spring fixes your problem. I bought my PM9 on Sunday and have been putting it through its paces. I had two glitches on the first 100 rounds, but after that it has been perfect.
It is the pocket pistol I have always wanted, but it does have to be reliable.
Good luck.
Just tried my new PM9 for the first time. Ran 26 rounds through and 85% of the time the slide did not return to the full forward position. Usually stopping 1/4" to 1/2" short of a full return to forward.
The serial is VB71xx. I was shooting WWB.
Is this the same issue you are referring to as "Return to Battery"?
Maybe I just need to run some more rounds thru. I must say that I am pleasantly surprised at the lack of significant recoil. I was expecting a handful, but it's not bad at all.
Make sure the recoil spring is in properly, the magazine springs are inserted properly in the magazine and lube the thing like a old tight 1911.
Kahrs are famous for not being able to run when dry, unlike a Glock. With all that I love my PM9 and carry it daily.
I just ran another 50 rounds thru with good news and bad news.
I removed some excess plastic bits from the slide rails and added some lube.
The failure of the slide to go forward all the way is getting better - out of the last 4 clips (using the 6 round clip) this happened only once and was 1/8" from going all the way back. That's a marked improvement from the first few magazines, and hopefully it will clear itself up altogether with another 50 rounds.
The seven round clip has another problem - with either 6 or 7 rounds loaded the second round will not chamber. It takes a nose dive in the clip and I have to partially retract the slide to eject the clip.

I just bought a PM9 and have had the same problems. It sounds like they are in the process of transitioning to a new main recoil spring. My gun came with the old shorter one. I called Kahr and they have shipped me another one.
I also had problems with the 7-round magazine. When I mentioned it they offered to exchange it for another 6-round one. Seems like a deal to me as the 7-rounder doesn't really fit my hand that well.
Bottom line is I would talk to Kahr. They seem anxious to set things right.

I just bought a P9 a few days ago but have not been to the range yet. I lubed it per the instruction in the "sticky". Thanks Michigun for making it and BackDraft for "sticking it".
Can anyone tell me the lengths of old and new recoil springs so I can check it before I head to the range? This is P9, not PM9. Is it an issue on the P9?
Thanks in advance. ;c

Your PM9 sounds almost as bad as mine was. I sent it back to Kahr twice and they finally replaced it. The new one is great.
Stephan is who worked it all out for me; unfortunately I hear he's not there anymore so I have no good advice about who to contact there. Some people like Dottie...she didn't do anything for me though.

When I got my PM9 it had major problems jamming or not going to full battery. On mine, it wound up that the extractor was not moving freely, I think because it was either jammed or not lubed well. I placed a good quantity of oil where the extactor and the front extractor pin come together then worked the extractor itself manually with a small screwdriver and worked the oil both into the pin joint and where the extractor meets the body.
This allowed the cartridge to move under the extractor properly instead of the extractor holding it back which was causing either no feeds or as you would say labourious feeds. That eliminated my feeding problem. I also changed the spring after that and since then my PM9 has be flawless.
Just a possibility.
ps: Yes this is exactly what is posted as a reply in another post, but your problems sound just like mine were.
HAD SAME PROBLEM 1 YEAR AGO WHEN NEW! The fix? A new spring assembly. The new one I ordered, that replaced the factory spring, was a full 1/3" longer than the factory spring that came installed. I've heard of several others with the same problem same fix.
It will fix yours to, just as mine and the others...
Well, I received the new recoil spring assembly today and ran about 100 rounds through it. It now malfunctions (FTB) about 20-25% of the time. Much much better than before but still not great. Now what do I do? Maybe needs more breaking in? It has 350 rounds through it now. I'll guess I'll call Kahr and see what they say.

try polishing the feed ramp. And oil your gun really well after. That seemed to help me alot too. Since i put the new spring assembly in, my kahr has had only 1 FTB, and i believe it was because i limp wristed it. Of course, ive only shot about 100 rounds through it since then. But maybe your right, it just might need to be broken in more. Good luck, dont give up on this great little gun!

This is one of those I'd say is beyond fixing by you by simply swapping out parts. I'd <strike>demand</strike> firmly insist that it be taken back by kahr and returned working 200% better. Make sure to point out that unless its working 100%, you have much cheaper paper weights available.
I had the same problems and tried all the same fixes including 2 new recoil springs, but the problem persisted.
I ended up taking 3 coils out of the mag spring for the 6 round mag, 4 from the 7, and 5 from the 8 rounders (purchased extra). The gun runs great.
Basically, the springs in the mags were too stiff. The result was that the recoil spring and slide did not have the power to strip of each round and feed it fully into chamber. So, but reducing the mag spring pressure, the recoil spring had less to overcome in stripping off each new round.
I would say you are right, it is beyond a simple spring swap to work. The feed ramp has been polished along with the entire barrel and lubed up very well. Weird thing is that now that i've field stripped it again, the new spring has taken a set and is the same length as the old one. I've noticed both springs are the same dark gunmetal color. Purhaps I've already had the new updated spring in the first place.
Well, Kahr had Fedex come pick it up for repair. They are just going to send me a replacement.:)
