Did you read that PM9 review by Zen_Grasshopper a few weeks back? Well I did. And since we work at the same PD I got to handle and drool all over it. Damn it was small in the hand. Even smaller than my beloved S&W 642 that rides in my pocket almost daily. And then it happened, that EVIL Sportsmans Warehouse forced me to buy one for myself. First it got Zen_G and then it got me. I immediately took it home and cleaned it up (from it's zip-lock bag of lubricant). I was immediately impressed with the fit and finish of the slide and metal parts and equally unhappy with the polymer frame. I was expecting Glock quality, but I think even my old Kel-Tec P11 was a little better out of the box. A little while later I had the imperfections mostly removed or repaired (just the same I am still not overly impressed with Kahr's polymer frame work). I did some comparison photo work with my S&W 642 and my Glock 26 and reaffirmed how tiny this thing really is. Since it will only be used for pocket work or serve as my on duty BUG, size is only next to reliability in importance. Don't get me wrong I love my 642, I just want something that reloads faster. Much faster.
Now here's the bizarre part of my story. A few weeks back I chased a fleeing suspect on foot and tackled him hard on fresh concrete. He went to jail and I broke my finger. So now I am on medical leave with a pin through my bone and percocet running through my veins. This does not make it very easy to break in my new PM9. That's where Zen-Grasshopper comes back into my story. He graciously volunteered to beta test my PM9 with 200 rounds of department FMJ 9mm. And just like his he tried everything he could to get it to malfunction or to limp wrist it. Fortunately he was unsucessful. 100% reliable with FMJ's. So we will call that a perfect initial break in, which now needs to be followed up with another 100 rounds or so of JHP's. I may even qualify with it next week (one handed) when I am off the meds. Then it will go into active service.
It's hard to praise a gun you have never shot. But from all the information I have, and it's performance for Zen_G, this one sure seems like a winner. 9mm power, fast reloads and smaller than pretty much anything else out there. I am the 3rd Kahr convert in my PD in the last 3 weeks and I bet I won't be the last.
