I just received my M1 Garand. I went through a private party because of the amount of time that it would take to get one from CMP. I will get my C&R license and then when it is time to get another one.
In the meantime, what kind of commercial ammunition should I use? I know that they recommend using military surplus because of the difference in primers, but I don't know if that will be an option for me. The range where I shoot requires you to buy their ammunition and I don't think that they sell surplus rounds. I believe that they only sell commercial ammunition. Is there a particular brand of commercial ammunition that works well and prevents slam firing. Thanks.

Congratulations on the selection of God's chosen rifle;f . As far as ammo, what the hell do you mean that you can only shoot THEIR ammo at their range? Screw that! Go find yourself another range not run by a bunch of ammo nazis. Never heard of that one before. I'm not sure about commericial loadings but I've been told to stay around 150gr's bullets. Real high pressure loads are hard on the operating rod. When you find a good range and use surplus go to www.aimsurplus.com . They have the non-corrosive Korean in a ammo can, 384rds on clips in bandoleers for $90, 80's manufactured! That's the best deal I've found on NC 30 06 ammo anywhere.

While I would love to find another range to shoot at where I could bring my own ammunition, but there are not alot of choices of where I can go. There are two ranges within an hour and a half of my house. One range allows you to bring your own ammunition but you cannot shoot a rifle there, only handguns. The other range allows rifles but you have to buy their ammunition.

Hmmm, relocate.;f It's worth it to shoot a Garand like it was intended to be.

You have to be very careful about commercial ammo as the wrong kind can damage the operating rod. Do a search over here, it has been discussed often:

Remington Green box with bullets under 180 grs. would be fine. PMC, Black Hills and others have 150 gr. ball (FMJ) that will work well too.

If you want to shoot something besides M2 ball with any regularity, it's recommended you purchase one of these in some form:

M1 Garand is not all that picky about ammos, but it does need lots of lubrication. With higher power commercial ammos, your Garand should still function well if the bolt and receiver is well lubricated.
I agree that the Korean surplus are nice ammo for your Garand. Price is reasonable and loads are designed for your Garand.
