When I bought an AR I got an A3 model for ease of mounting optics. Then I discovered the "gooseneck" mount. Why isn't this more popular for red dots and holo-sights? Seems like it would work just as well as a flat top, plus it's cheaper because you have built in irons that are co-witnessed. I can see why A3s are better for scopes, but for dots/holos, why isn't this setup seen more?
I tried a PRI gooseneck on my A2, and found that the width of the mount within the carry handle sight channel really cut down on the field of view, particularly if your rear sight zeroed any measurable number of clicks off center. I took my barrel off, sold my A2 upper, and rebarreled a A3 upper that I bought off the internet, and haven't looked back. It's just much more flexible, and gets the center line of any scope you mount, conventional or red dot, closer to the bore axis.
