I am considering putting an adjustable gas system in my Garand to lessen the blow on the op rod when shooting commercial ammuntion. I was thinking of the Schuster system, but I have a few questions first.
1) How difficult is an adjustable gas plug to install?
2) How much adjustment is required after installation and is this adjustment difficult?
3) Is there any problem with them working their way loose through normal use?
4) What are the tools that are needed to install it?
5) Is this even worth it or is it a waste of money?
Thanks.

I don't have any first hand knowledge of the adjustable plug, only what I've read.
1) Unscrew the old plug, screw in the new one.
2) This is copied from the Midway website "Made from hardened tool steel and parkerized. Service rifle legal! Has the same appearance and configuration as original; CMP 4th Edition #4-13-2-b. By adjusting the volume of gas in the cylinder you change the speed of the op-rod and the harmonics of the barrel. If you want to tame things down, it can be opened up just enough to function, or opened fully for single shot functionality. If you are working on your own hand loads, a quarter turn WILL affect group size. If you have a 308 Garand this is a necessity if you want to safely shoot heavier 168 grain match bullets. Also a must have if you hunt with your CMP Garand but want to shoot heavier 30-06 loads. Includes instructions and the adjustment tool (allen wrench)."
3) None that I've heard of.
4) A big, straight blade screwdriver or M10 tool.
5) I don't shoot commercial ammo (I reload), and several companies make rounds suitable for use in the M1 Garand
Steve the 308 M-1 doesn't need an ajustable plug to shoot 168's. In fact it doesn't need them to shoot 175's either. I have a tuned 308 M-1 I use for High Power when I ain't shooting my AR.
The 308 has a different dia. gas hole from what I understand.
I also believe the adj plug fills a non-issue hole. There is plenty of manf. ammo which is safe to shoot in the M-1. Some people feel better using it but the adj. plug is not CMP approved.

The adjustable plug is for shooting ammo that is not "standard" to the M1.
Meaning if someone wanted to shoot hunting rounds in their rifle, which operate at pressures over that which is recommended for the M1, they can adjust the vent so that the over pressure doesn't damage the op rod.
Yes, there is ammo being made to the standard for the M1, but there is also alot of other ammo that shold not be shot in your average M1.
