Lets say you got enough funds to get a good CCW that you also intend to shoot for several types of competions. For this discussion we will not be limited to a $400 Glock nor will we be allowed to purchase a $5000 race gun. You plan to CCW the gun and shoot IDPA, USPSA, Falling Plates and possibly some other similar event.

What would be your pick???

Also take into consideration 40 S&W makes major. Affordable ammo, non reloader.
Single action triggers are the easiest to hit with. 10 round mags are needed, and it would be nice if they didn't hang out of the bottom. Would you go with a semi custom 40 built on a fat frame?
How about a good ole Glock 17 and forget the worry of major factor. Or how about a Glock 22? But Glock triggers are not what good 1911's are. Note too that you are not trying to be #1 in the Nation shooting you just want to have fun and be able to hit targets at reasonable ranges. Last thing, don't turn this into a mine is better just think about the situation of the above shooter and what would fit best.

Those are the things I considered and I went with the G23. It is large enough to get the job done but is small enough to easily conceal. It's a great 'all-around' gun.

I would also consider a Commander size 1911.

G17 if you are able to CCW a full size frame. G19 if not. Shoot production in USPSA (minor PF class) and the 9mm is fine for all other competitions (GSSF and IDPA). This is the least expensive start because the holster/mag pouches are then the same in IDPA and USPSA and worn behind the body midpoint in both disciplines.

BTW: I shot a G23 in IDPA and USPSA with my reloads at major and minor PF for several years. If you are going to compete, reloading is a monetary necessity unless you shoot 9mm.

I will attempt to do a dream build only for my feble mind.

1911 style
Commander length slide, stainless steel
Medium width frame, just wide enough for 10 or 11 rounds of 40 S&W in a good steel mag. Frame would be standard lengh grip and have the thin grips. Frame would be silver aluminum.
Mags would be easy to get and be $15.00 each.
Match grade barrel fitted possibly ramped.
Trigger set to 3 lbs, longer length & solid
Single side safety for RH
Sights Bomar rear with corners rounded slightly and milled to sit low in the slide, front black srrated with 20 degree slnnt foward. These would also contain the night sight vials for low light situations. Straight 8 type or 3 across version ok
30 LPI in front and flat MS housing with matching checkering

NO: mag wells, no front slide serrations, no big button mag releases, no big safety, no big slide release, no engraving, no muzzle devices at all, no wierd triggers other NO's could be added.

This would be the BLING BLING for me, kids taught me that.

Whats your idea???????

Glock 23, 22, or 35. The largest one you can conceal.

Glock 19.

Glock 22
1. Shoots IDPA SSP, ESP. If you reloaded, 40 minor is very soft
2. USPSA Production with IDPA gear, or Limited/L10 major.
3. Reliable equipment for ccw. 40 is good for ccw also.

This isn't a gun that will work in all these situations, It is a gun that will excell in these situations.

A little trigger work and the trigger can be really nice.

It's really hard to do it all with one gun. Since you said money wasn't the biggest consideration a G17 for all of the gun games (police trade in will do fine for $350 or so) and a G23 for CCW. To get both of these will probably be less than the custom 1911. The G17 with a set of Heinie rears and Dawson Precision fiber optic front or Dawson adj rear. A nice 2 pound drop in trigger and away to you go to gun games of your choice. The G23 will get you through whatever situation you encounter for CCW.

It's just to hard to get a dirt bike to run on the road and a road bike isn't meant for the dirt. By the way, I don't ride bikes anymore just seemed like a good analogy.

Good luck in your decision.

if you can conceal it, a G35, if not a G22 or G23.

If you plan to reload: Glock 35. If you don't (like me): Glock 34. I don't find it difficult at all to carry the G34.

I can carry the G34 with a pair of shorts, a t-shirt and a good holster (Threat Solutions UCR). I bought a seperate set of trigger parts so I could have stock parts in it when I carry, then swap the whole assembly out for matches. With a polish job, overtravel stop, titanium firing pin/safety pluger and lighter springs, the glock trigger can be quite good (TONS better than stock). It will never be a 1911 trigger, but good enough for practical shooting IMO.

Good luck.

How about a G22 or G23 and a Storm Lake 9mm conversion barrel? for an extra $98.00. Fun, carry and comp.

My choices have been:

SSP - CZ-75 PCR (Compact)
CDP - Kimber CDP Pro (Commander)

I now prefer:

SSP - CZ-75B
ESP - STI Trojan 5.0 9mm
CDP - Kimber CDP Custom (Government)

I will eventually try a Glock once I get more proficient with them. Too much trigger time with CZ's and 1911's, but I'm trying.

A glock 22 will do it all. I have one and used it for all types of competition for a while.

If I had $5,000. I'd buy a glock 22 and $4600.00 worth of reloading components and it would take surgeons to take the smile off my face.

But if I wanted to build a race gun for carry/competition, I'd have a high cap .40 or 10mm (probably 10mm unless I decided I didn't want to shag brass) built up on a standard dust cover frame with a removable mag well, nice 3 pound trigger, buried bomar sights, guide rods (1 tungsten, 1 steel*) for competition with a plug for carry, dehorned like it was a bar of soap with a caspian slide cut out for a glock front sight so I can change between fiber optic, black steel, and tritium front sights easily for different shooting venues.

It would be as black as the ace of spades and have some kind of cool carbon fiber grips.

And sometime when the earth has perminent colonies around the planet jupiter I may actually get a custom 1911 built. :(

Ted

*I don't know if the tungsten really helps but I always wanted to try it.

If you want 40 S&W I'd go with a Sig 226, Sig 229, or Glock 23. For competition, check out the stuff from www.lancerammo.com Meets power factor but reduced recoil.

I'll second that, but while the 226 is probably my favorite, if you're new to IDPA you might want to give the glock the edge for the simplicity, no da/sa, decocker, etc. Just pull the trigger.

The G23 is the best all-around answer. I carry one on and off duty, and have used it in USPSA matches, though I usually shoot a G35 in competition nowadays.

And stay away from those foo-foo Sigs! You have to fight the gun too much to be competitive.
