I've shot a total of 4 IDPA matches in my life.
I classified yesterday as a Sharpshooter (139.something) with my G19.
I'm kinda proud of myself. :)

Way to go! Work on those draws, and make those -0 shots and watch your times improve.
If it were me I would stay in sharpshooter till I got bumped up for winning.

Because winning is more fun!
Look at Robbie, or Sevigny. I'm sure they have a great time everytime they shoot, but I am sure they have a better time if they win. Thats just being human.
The OP states he has only shot IDPA 4 times. Reading strictly by that, I am going to assume he is a new shooter. I could be wrong though.
What fun is it to play a game where you won't have a chance at winning? If he has only shot IDPA 4 times, what are his chances of winning a match shooting in sharpshooter. To me sharpshooter is probably the hardest class in IDPA. Its no fun ( at least to me ) to never have a shot at winning. Just because you can shoot the qualifier fast, doesnt mean you can hang with the sharpshooters during a match.
If he is looking at IDPA as "training" instead of a "game", then it doesn't matter at all. But IDPA is a game, and its more fun for me to get bumped up because I win, than because I learned how to shoot a qualifier fast.
DLM: I'm not saying you are a new shooter, bad shooter, good shooter, ok shooter ETC. I just read exactly what you wrote. I am not slamming you in any way :) heck for all I know you could be a better shooter than I am. :)

I'm new to IDPA and competition shooting as a whole but not new to shooting a handgun.
The one thing I've learned so far, is everything I learned previously was forgotton the second the timer sounded.:)

Congrats are in order. Your life is over as you use to know it. The bug is a bad one and very hard to shake.
Tim, truth is there is only one winner and many shooters. Try to get some positive feedback for yourself in more ways than just winning. If it was winning for all of us, few of us would actually shoot because there is only one winner.
You need to qualify once a year with the new rule book. It's a funny thing. You don't want to practice the qualifier and burn it down and get ranked higher than your performance in matches, but you don't want to sandbag either.
Not IDPA bashing but USPSA has a more accurate way of classifing there shooters. I shoot both and like both.
