Just sent off my new 7.5 inch SRH to Magna-Port for its "Advantage" treatment . . . shorten the barrel to 4.8 inches, recrown and cut four trapezoidal slots in it, do a general trigger job for double action and refinish the gun. When it returns with the addition of a Hogue Tamer grip, it will visit Rusty Sherrick for his Big John Cross-Draw holster in horsehide.
That should bring some peace of mind on the long hikes next summer.
And the Hornady 325 grain jacketed HP will plow right through four big city phone books. Some power! I can't wait!
way cool idea.how did you settle on the 4.8 inch length?i too have a 7 1/2 inch target grey SRH in .480.what a bull!th shorter barrel really sounds cool.the porting will benifit the Srh. My RB in 454 is made shootable due to the ports imho.wish my srh had that.

I target shoot and hunt with the Ruger 480 and, although, it is a little more significant than the 44 magnum, I do not think that it is worthwhile to port this revolver. I also prefer the 7.5 barrel length. I would, however, do what you are doing for the 454 Casull. I think that they have sufficient recoil that you would want to control barrel lift and reduce recoil. Please, do not get me wrong, this is just my opinion for what it is worth, and what you are doing is perfectly acceptable for you. I have been told that I should not port a 454 Ruger SRH but I think that is where I draw the line.
It is interesting to note that the new model "X" series from S&W in both the 500 and 460 calibers, that they are being presented are ported. I would wonder if Ruger is taking note and considering that possibility in the future production of their SRH series with large calibers like the 480 and the 454.
It seems, also, that the 480 is a rare move on the part of Ruger to introduce this caliber and a firearm to match. If Ruger follows it's traditional pattern, one would think that the company would be playing follow the leader and introducing it's own (revolver) answer to the 460 or 500 magnum calibers presented by Smith & Wesson.
they are a gun company.its what they do.why not make a caliber and gun in your name.da huh?

The dimension of 4.8 inches was suggested by Mag-Na-Port for the obvious marketing effect, I believe. My thought was to shorten the barrel to five inches, and add ports to reduce muzzle flip for following shots at close range. Think Charging Grizzly!
They say it will take more than two months to complete the mods . . .
oh well, not looking for any bears this year anyway. I have a .38 Chiefs Special with four round ports which hold it steady as a rock, and also a couple of Glocks with ports, but the effect is less on an automatic, in my opinion. Each to his own . . .
