View Full Version : Internal lock
I know this is kind of a controversial subject, but I kind of like the idea of an internal lock on a handgun. We entertain a good bit, and some of our friends have small children, and this is one more safeguard. Also if I have to leave my weapon in my truck, etc. Any experience with the Glock internal lock on your 19?

My only experience has been calling my dealer to make sure the 19 I just put money down on didn't have the lock. What's wrong with a good old-fashioned cable lock? They're free at the Sheriff's office, or $5 at Wal-Mart.

An internal keyed lock has no place on a gun. I'd hate to see them catch on, or get mandated by any future law.
Your new glock will come with a cable lock, just use that. Or for that matter, field strip the gun and stick the barrel in your pocket when the kids are around. You'll remember to put you gun back together when you empty your pockets before going to bed after the kids leave.

I think they have already caught on. While there is nothing wrong with a cable lock or other type of external lock, it just seems to me to be simpler to have an internal one. I'm not sure I understand the complaints against them.

In my opinion, less is more. I rely on owning and treating firearms as always loaded and "always ready to go". All gun safety is exercised on the handling and safe keeping of the weapon, with no reliance on "safeties" or locks to make up for human error. In the purest sense, I want the least amount mechanisms between the trigger and firing pin.
When things go bump in the night, the LAST thing I want to figure out is how to unlock a gun in a hurry, or waste memtal energy to recall if it is already unlocked.
Finally, in my opinion, I think there are numerous unintentional discharges of firearms because someone "thought" the safety was "on", or in the future, that the key lock was engaged. My father always taught me to keep my finger off the trigger as the NUMBER ONE way to prevent accidents; the second lesson was to NEVER rely on a safety. That was back in the 1960's.
side note- I wish my father was alive to give me feedback on my G19. Unfortunately, my father passed before Glocks came out, but I rest easy with an assummed approval from him on these fine guns.

I think the OP was refering to the occasional locking of the gun, not using an internal lock as a daily safty device. IMHO the atvantage to a cable or some other external locking device is it is one less thing to break or malfunction on the weapon when you need it. A cable lock when removed has a 0% chance of causing a FTF, an internal lock, nomatter the quality is one more thing to go wrong (i.e. going to the lock position without you using the key to do it). When there are children around my house that i know are not familiar with firearms, i simply lock it up for the afternoon.

My objection to built-in gun safety locks is simply this, that it places the empahsis for safety on the weapon rather than the shooter. Hence, it teaches no skills and therefore perpetuates the culture of victimization wherein any accidents will be blamed on the manufacturer.

I tell you something though, at least the glock lock as pictured in magazines actually looks usable.
The recess would appear to funnel the key into the lock. And they key and its opening appear larger than a paper clip so it would appear to be usable under stress.
The other locks I see are just there for lawyer protection.
I just bought a new 26 and it has a lock, my dealer did not have any without a lock. It does not make the gun function any differently but I still wish I did not have it. If it is mechanical it can break. Now I have a nice new 19 with no lock, hehe.

I remember one thread with at least two people that couldn't get their internal locks to disengage. I wouldn't want that to ever happen when I needed it, so my G19 remains unlocked forever. I do keep the key on my ring because of the cool glock logo.
If you are worried about children while entertaining, just put your Glock in a holster with some sort of retention and wear it. Everybody will feel safer knowing your ready to go to guns if necessary.
