View Full Version : Strange noise wile driving
I was driving this 1998 Plymouth Voyager van and there was this high pich noise from under the hood when I was driving. It sounded like everytime the wheels turned they made this noise. It is not present all of the time though. Any thoughts on what this could be?
Be brave and lift the hood;Q
Check your power steering fluid and make sure it to the max. level.
Belt slipping on your power steering pump?
Haha. I checked under the hood. Would it be the power steering if it was driving straight?
More like a metal scraping rather than a belt slipping.
Front pads are worn thin and rubbing on the squealer, or the hubs could be shot. Does the noise go away when you step on the brakes lightly, worse? Does it change when you turn the steering wheel and load one side or the other? Could also be a bearing in the accesory drive system, like the alternator or the tensioner, but this would be more likely to occur when stopped also, unless it won't happen until RPM comes up.
It is sort of off and on. I don't really hear it when I step on the brakes. Seems to go along with the rotation of the tire like it is something in that area. Would that be the Hubs? Turning does not change the noise either.
Don't have to be using the brakes to hear the built in ware(sp) indicator scraping and it's not always consistant. The sound could also be wheel bearings going out, cv joint bad, ball joint bad, etc. Get the thing checked out soon, you don't want you wheels falling off....and yes it can happen.
I usually turn the radio up until the noise can longer be heard.;f
