I have not shot any of the older ones but I love my MKIII SS. My son and I lovegoing and shooting 1000 rounds off. I intend on getting into Bullseye Competition shooting soon too. I am shooting about every weekend now and starting to see some improvements. I think if you work with one pistol, no matter what it is, you can learn to be the best with it.Opinions are like boogers, everytime you get one, you find another;a

I don't know what could be different about the trigger - I'm active on Ruger boards and I've never heard anything bad about the triggers.

The magazine safety sucks. You have to repeatedly insert and remove the magazine when fieldstripping it. This can be disabled a couple of ways - removing a spring or (a much better option) replacing the hammer and hammer bushing with ones for a MKII.

There is a loaded chamber indicator which is no big deal either way. There's another difference from the older models - when it's cocked and the safety is on, you can insert a "key" - more like an allen wrench - and tighten a screw that keeps the safety from being released.

Having said all of that I absolutely LOVE this pistol. A friend and I went through 550 rounds in about 1/2 hour - maybe 45 minutes - he liked it so well he bought one for himself.

There is a thing called the Ultimate Cliploader - you dump ammo into the bin, shake it a little, slide a magazine in the bottom and it loads the magazine in a couple of seconds.

I have the 22/45 version with a 5 1/2 inch bull barrel. I got some rubber wrapaound grips for a 1911 and hollowed out the inner surface to fit over the non removable grips. "Glued" them on with clear silicone sealer.

Like I said, easily defeated. Replace the hammer and it's bushing. If the loaded chamber indicator bothers you, remove inner portion of it and glue the outer portion in place in the barrel. 'the other safety is a complete non-issue.

Or look for an MKII

BUY IT! I just dumped a Walter P-22. Could not hit the floor with the SOB. I guess someone else is going to enjoy this overpriced piece of tupperware. So! After I got cash for the P-22, I got a
MK III. WOW! what a tack driver. Put about 1,000 rounds down range over three day's. Not one jam, misfire or any operational problem. I dicovered it does like CCI Blazer the best of all the .22 stuff.

I used it to compete in our club's monthly .22 match, placed #1 using the MK III. The best I could ever do with my old trusty S&W 21A
was # 7. BUY THE MK III and enjoy. The MK II mags do not work in the MK III. Buya few extra Mags from KYimports.com.

You can buy the parts to build magazines for about 9 bucks apiece from Ruger.

FWIW, I replaced the hammer on mine with a MKII version and bought parts for MKII mags, I can't tell the difference and they work. There are a LOT of messages on here about magazines and which ones work with what.
