Hi Everybody.

I took my brand new Glock 30/w rail to the range for the first time the other day. I fired 100 rounds of American Eagle hardball with no problems. I then switched to a box of 185 grain +p Hydrashoks. I had no problems halfway through the box of 50 when the gun started to jam every other shot, then every shot. The casing would eject but would jam when a new round would try to enter the chamber. I know different guns can respond differently to different ammo, but I thought the Glock 30 was more resistant to this type of thing than other makes and kinds. What could be the culprit? Does this mean the gun is a lemon? Thanks all.

By no means do I consider myself an expert in diagnosing Glock malfunctions but I'd say that one thing that can't hurt and might help is to polish the feedramp with something like Simichrome polish.

The second thing is that magazines cause more malfunctions in semi autos than anything assuming your ammo is good and what you are shooting is good.

Hopefully, some more knowledgeable individuals on this site will chime in with more advice. Good luck. Don

After you started having problems, did you go back to the American Eagle ammo that you didn't have problems with?

Certain guns don't like certain ammo. This can be a magazine problem, feedramp, etc.

That's one thing about going to the range. Try different types. There are brands that I won't touch with G30, but may work very well with yours.

The hardball you were shooting is pretty dirty stuff. Your G30 was probably gummed up with powder residue. How clean was it when you started? Was it lubed properly? Excess lube can cause gumming. Not enough lube can also cause sticking problems.

Additionally, your gun might not like the 185 gr. Hydrashok's. Some bullets have very sharp corners at the hollow cavity transition. This can cause nosediving. I would try a 230 gr. JHP with a slightly rounded transition like Winchester Ranger T or Golden Saber. Heavier bullets usually have a longer overall length which will also help with your feeding problem. There are many good self-defense ammo choices besides Hydrashoks. You might have better luck with Fed HST, WW Ranger T, Rem. Golden Saber or Speer Gold Dot.

Another thing you shouldn't overlook is shooter fatigue. Shooting a bunch of mild loads and then switching to some hot stuff can cause flinching and limpwristing. Try shooting the carry rounds 1st next trip to the range.

Forget about polishing the feed ramp. Glocks don't have one.;)

It seems to be a follower thing. I use "old style" followers with HP ammo and I have not had any problems. Somewhere I read that Glock aknowledged the problem with the follower and corrected it with Law Enforcement guns but not with others. Hope this helps. I had my 1st Failure to feed with some Wolf ammo and now stay away from that stuff. I bought a case so I'm just shooting it until it is gone.

Thanks everyone for your comments. The gun was factory clean when I went to the range. Since I still have one box of Hydrashoks I’ll fire them first with the gun nice, clean and lubed (as per the manual) to see if gumminess contributed to the problem and/or wrist fatigue. I thought Glocks could still fire under adverse conditions (at least more adverse than 100 rds. of dirty AE). If American Eagle burns dirty, is there cheap practice ammo that is cleaner? I’ll also try 230 grain hollow points. I’ll let you guys know of my findings.

I don't know what a follower is. :)

I highly doubt 100 rounds of dirty ammo would cause this. I use American Eagle for my dept quals and am very satisfied with it. My suggestion, call Glock. This is a brand new gun, let them make it right. It should feed the 185's.

I ordered 21 new Glock 21's for my department. Out of those guns there was one bad apple. The gun in question would consistantly malfuncton with various shooters. I sent it back, it was exchanged for a new one.

Don't overlook the fact that on new guns (and magazines), there's always the possibility of burrs, machining marks, molding flash and fit tolerance build up. Any of these conditions could contribute to malfunctions. Some guns are just a little tight when brand new but should not be after 200-300 rounds.

I'd go shoot a few hundred rounds of whatever functions well through it, clean & lube it and then try a box of your favorite carry rounds. If it don't function flawlessly by then, call Glock and find out how to return it for warranty service.

The follower is that black thing that moves inside your magazines. If you notice, it has a particular shape and angle. It is responsible, along with the feed ramp on your barrel, for directing the rounds into the chamber. I've been told that a heavy duty spring in your mag will eliminate any 'nosing-down' that different rounds might experience.

The others may be right about you just getting a bad-apple. It happens. Glock will make it right if that is the case.

Good luck and happy shooting.
