The guy says the gun is in "extremely nice" condition, has 2 extra new barrels, and he wants $350 for it. He's also got "about" 2000 rounds of whatever ammo it uses that he'll let go for $0.25/piece. So basically this will be a $850 purchase because I'll definately get all of the ammo.
I've got the cash, anyone think I should go for it?
the price for the gun is right on for an egyptian fn-49. (8mm) if its any other country and you havent bought it yet, shame on you. the luxembourg, columbia, argentine, or venezuelan models, snatch that sucker up as quick as possible, as those models bring a good bit more money.
an average condition egyptian fn-49 will run b/w $300 and $500. the other countries will bring considerably more. if it is an egyptian model, and its in the original stock (with brass disc and buttpad) its worth a little more than the more recent century imports that came in a beautiful dark wood stock with plastic buttpad.
we've established that the price of the gun is good, no matter the make, as long as it is in average or better condition. the ammo, were gonna need more info about.
if its 7mm mauser(Venezuela), 7.65 argentine (argentina, who else?), .308 (supposed "navy" model), or 30-06 (Luxembourg), .25 isnt too far off. if its 8mm mauser (egypt) then .25 is too much, unless its non-corrosive (olympic).
i shoot corrosive ammo thru mine all the time, its not that big a deal. just make sure you use windex with ammonia to clean up with. the corrosive 8mm can be had dirt cheap 760 rds for $54 at interordnance.
let us know more info so we can help ya out

Thanks for the info. Looks like it's an Egyptian model because he said it's 8mm mauser. I'll ask him if it's non-corrosive ammo or not.
I know know this guy is getting at least some of my money since he's a "mint" Enfield L42 and L39, so I have to see where it's going to go.
Thanks again. :)
if its non corrosive 8mm, its a reasonable deal. if not, just buy the gun.

It's non-corrosive ammo, and I'll be picking up the gun and ammo within the next couple days.

I'm not aware of any non-corrosive 8mm surplus. If that's run of the mill surplus Turkish, first of all do not shoot it in that rifle, and secondly he's tearing you a new one on this deal in regard to the ammo.I'd take the rifle, and leave the ammo.Do not shoot turkish surplus in a semi-auto,there's almost no crimp and this can set the stage for a ka-boom if setback occurs(trust me,I tried it in my 8mm Hakim).
I bought an Egyptian FN-49 in 8mm mauser in the mid 80's. I guess I fired around a hundred rounds and the firing pin broke. Seems like the one piece firing pin was prone to breaking, later models have a 2 piece firing pin.
Thought I would post this picture for you FN49 fans. The rifles are as-new condition, FN, with ABL crest (Belgian Military), for 500 dollars. Too bad they are in a shop in Brussels.
you owe me a new pair of underwear ;f
