What is ment by this term and just how does it benefit the shooter? Can someone educate me please?

A free floated barrel does not contact the forend/stock/handguard(s) of the rifle; only the receiver. This allows the shooter to use a sling or bipod for added stability without pulling or pushing on the barrel, which would affect the point of impact. Basically it minimizes the things that can degrade accuracy, also including warping of the gunstock due to heat/cold/moisture.
