View Full Version : best factory .40s&w load for USPSA
I just bought a G35 & 4 hi-cap mags and want to start shooting in USPSA competition. I would like to know what is the best ammo to buy. Since I'm in Ca I'm not sure what ammo if any I can buy online, and the stores near me don't have brands like Double Tap. I want something that has reasonably light recoil but still makes Major. Thanks in advance.

The Winchester White Box 165gr. may make major in your G35, but you should have it chronograph to be sure. I doubt it will make much over the 165 Power Factor though. If you really want to compete in USPSA you really need to start reloading.
Check www.lancerammo.com They have competition ammo that meets the power factor but is softer than factory ammo. They just cut the shipping costs to the Western states.
From time to time they have a posting in the classified section with discount codes. I don't think they have a current discount offer but you might want to check.
I've shot the 40 and use a lot of their 9mm competition ammo.

I had good success with the Federal American Eagle 165gr load with my G35. About 1030fps / 169pf chrono'd at 2 state matches last year. Favored it a bit over the Winchester white box. I bought mine over the internet from natchezss.com.
Natchez (http://www.natchezss.com/ammo.cfm?contentID=productDetail&ammoRecID=2&brand=FA&prodID=FAAE40R3&CFID=1242446&CFTOKEN=61892134)

You should be able to order Atlanta Arms 180grn loads for competition. Do a google search. By the way, they were Phil Strader's sponsor for ammo. The also sponsor Dave Sevigny. Reasonable prices.
UMC (remington) 180's are my favorite factory round.

Winchester 165gr white box gave me a power factor of 165.1 at the VAMD sectional.
I usually shoot Remington 180gr Golden Sabre's but I was out and had to buy the Winchester.

Nathan - thanks for showing up to our humble mud-fest. I was the tall RO on the Shooters Paradise stage (www.shootersparadise.com).

That's REALLY cutting it close! In general, I prefer the 180s as they offer less perceived recoil and usually give a little more margin over the chrono. A note on Atlanta Arms ammo: I was speaking of their Black Box line using NEW brass; it should make power factor. The blue box commercial reload fails to meet major out of a Glock 22.

I use the WWB 165 gr. .40 in my Glock 22. The Winchester spec shows a power factor of 174.9 (174,900) and still above 165 at 50 feet. I expect it to easily make 165 in a G35.

By chance, do ya know if the same ammo will make major out of a 24C?

I generally reload, but when I am lazy I will shoot CCI blazers. The 180 gr will chrono out of my G35 at 176PF. This is a bit high, but I don't feel anymore recoil then factory 165 gr round.

Im not sure what stage that was. I was there Saturday Afternoon and broke my G22 on my last stage with 3 targets left but she kept on running and I finished. I broke the Locking Block pin in half. Called glock and they shipped me a new one, free of charge.
I had a blast at the match, after the initial "I dont want to get muddy" feelilng, I slopped on through and had a great time. I look forward to the next one.
Bob (I think that was his name, he shoots North Mtn) Chrono'd my 8 rounds out of my stock G22, I have the sheet upstairs but it was a PF of 165.1. A lot of people were shocked. My speeds were right around 1040 with a 165gr bullet.
I usually shoot the 180 Golden Sabre but ran out (issued ammo) so I picked up a couple boxes of WWB.

I just ran into the same problem with a friend's G19; turns out the locking block was cracked in half too & that what was what cause the pin to break. Please let us know if the block is cracked too. BTW - we are having an all-classifier match at Shooters in December. Check the website. D.
wolf ammo!
I did a short review of wolf 180's in the caliber section of GT.
Very soft shooting load and is listed by the manufacturer as making major.
do a search for "Quick Wolf 40sw Review." pics included.
Cheap too!

I dont recall seeing a crack but I didn't really look that hard either. I shot a 125+ round match 2 weeks ago with no problems but ill take a closer look tonight and let you know.

I wish I could make the Shooters matches but my week doesn't allow it. :(
