View Full Version : 10mm hunting
I was wondering what bullet types and weights(factory and reloads) people have used while hunting with a 10mm with success? I have taken two wild hogs so far in the last week one with a hot 10mm XTP bullet reload and another with factory 175gr silvertips both hogs dropped within 20 ft after being shot. Both bullets did exit and leave a large hole going out with lung shoots. I am shooting a contender pistol with scope and both hogs were under 50 yard shots and the hogs were from 150-200lbs dressed weight each. So far I have been very impressed with the 10mm performance in the field from my limted use.I am trying to settle in on a load for the up coming deer season now that I feel the 10mm will be plenty of power at the ranges I will shoot.

I hit a bluejay with a beartooth. Needless to say, I couldnt find the bluejay afterwards.
I am waiting for the beartooths to be back in stock at doubletap. I was told around 3 weeks which is going to be real close to the season opener here so it looks like something else will have to do this year. I am thinking 200gr handload XTP at 1200-1300FPS.I was really surpised at the damage the 175gr silvertip did on the hog I shot yesterday. It was just plain nasty inside unreal amount of lung and tissue damage. I was just worried they may not go all the way through everytime being a self defense hollow point style.

I've shot a few deer with the factory Silvertips. One was at 84 yards, but the other few were in bow range. It works fine. All shots were from a Glock 20 with stock barrel.
I've also shot turkeys, raccoons, a skunk, and too many ground hogs to count.

84 yds? Damn son.
I've killed afew with the factory hornady XTP loading ( 200gr in the earlier pkg box ) and since then have loaded my own XTP or BTB bullets. And have had overall good results.

I killed a small whitetail with 180grXTP at 1400fps.It killed the deer on a broadside shot, but I would have prefered a bit more penetration.Bullet was recovered under offside skin.

I had a dream last night that I was out deer hunting and a bear confronted me. I shot him three times in the head from straight on with my glock 20 (200gr XTP Double Tap's) and they just torn off some skin and got deflected away. ;P
The bear got extremly pissed at being shot in the head. He rushed me and right before the bear got to me my brother shot him from a couple hundred yards away with his .308.
Damn crazy dreams...
I guess I must be worried if my 10mm is going to be enough for large game. I think it should work just fine, but it is the first time out with it... I figure it can't be much worse the my .243; after all the 10mm 200gr. Double Tap's are a heavier round and they are still going about 1300fps.

Did it hit any bones? How about expansion?
How far did the dear travel before falling?

It went right through a rib on the entrance.
Expansion was perfect, ending at about .60 inch.
Deer went about 10yards and folded.
The bullet cut through lungs.
I had a lot of speed on the bullet, and it performed exactly as it was supposed to.But for all that, I just wasn't impressed with the amount of damage.I think the slower 200gr would do just as much damage AND exit the far side.
I carry Double Tap 200 gr. xtp loadings while out in the field. I haven't shot a deer with them yet, but I have taken out a couple of raccoons with great success.
I've taken several whitetails with the 200gr. XTP from DoubleTap. All went no more than 10 yards before dropping. All shots were under 50 yards with a Glock 20 - 6" barrel. I think the 200gr XTP is a good round for deer.

The one deer I shot with my Glock, I used Corbon's 180 gn jsp hunting load. deer went ten yards and crashed.
(Funny, I wrote that tale up for this site...but I think it's outside of the archive range).
I'm short on ammo right now, so can't try my 610 for the WI deer season next week.... damn.
(MY reloading tasks are full, and weather is going to preclude range time before season at this point)

I got my first pistol deer this morning using a stock g-20. The 170 gr. JHP went through about 5 inches of meat, smashed the back bone and stopped about 3 inches later just under the skin on the far side. That was a total of about 10 inches of penetration including the backbone. Interestingly enough the most damage appeared to be by the entrance wound. It was as though the bullet expanded at the entrance, used up most of it’s energy and maintained it’s mushroom shape the rest of the way. If I hadn’t found the bullet at the far end I would have thought I shoot it from the other side. The deer wasn’t going anywhere with a broken backbone. I gave a coup-de-gra that turned it from deer into venison.
I was very pleased with the performance of the 10mm.

Timotheous46,
Congratulations on your deer too!

Tim:
Good shooting.
Just curious about the load, though. Was the "170 gr. JHP" a handload, or did you use a factory 170gn JHP load - like PMC's or Norma's original?

agtman,
It was a 170 grain PMC.

I shot a Mountain grouse with a FMJ bullet. Hit it in the head at about 10 paces. Never found the bullet so I can't tell you about expansion. But it did exit and I don't suppose it expanded.... at all.
I also shot a whitetail buck this morning. (See other thread http://glocktalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=460474 )
Dropped him in his tracks.
Yesterday I took my first 10 point whitetail with my G20. I hit him in the spine and the 200 grain Double Tap XTP exited just behind the lower rib cage. All I can say is what awesome penetration! I wish I had some photos of the entrance and exit wounds. It was only a 10 yard shot from my tree stand and he dropped instantly. You gotta love the Glock 20!
