View Full Version : rail on 2nd Generation 19
Hello All,
I have been carrying my Glock 19 for over 10years now. I bought her used in 1993 (Serial number starts with DX). Thousands of rounds and still going strong. It's a 2nd Generation and fits my hand better than the 3rd's do AND I have a lot of sentimental attachment to her.
My question is...is it possible to have a gunsmith put a rail on a 2nd generation 19? If so, who? Does it affect performance? Has anyone else attempted this?
If this question has been asked before, I apologize. I've searched all over glocktalk and couldn't find anything...
Anyway, thanks!

You have some other options. You could send your gun to Robar and have them put a rail on your second Gen gun. I have seen this on a Glock 17L. It is not the most attractive thing, but it works.
You could also purchase a 3rd gen frame from Glockmiester and have them send it to Robar to have the finger grooves removed. Robar would then send it the frame to your FFL. I have seen this and I think it looks much better and functions much better.

Here is Robar's Web site:

I called Robar and they said they couldn't cut a rail into a Glock 19. Their quote, "Just not enough there."
I just need to decide if a light rail is really worth it.
Thanks

Thanks
If you use the gun for anything besides playing on a range, etc., it most definitely IS worth it.
I have no use for lasers or other aiming devices on a handgun; but a good white light increases the utility of your piece many times.
Both my 3rd gen G19 carry guns (I usually work plainclothes) have the rail, and I have a StreamLight M3X that sees a lot of use on them. I have a 2nd gen G17 that was seized by our CP guys during a mule stop. It is my car/uniform gun, and is a "free" gun; i.e., issued to me by my agency. But I'm going to buy a personal 3rd gen G-17, because I like the finger grooves and definitely missed the rail during my recent stint of hurricane duty in uniform. Try using a separate flashlight vs a gun-mounted light, and you'll see what I mean.
I thought I was going to be able to do a "frame swap" (where you pay Glock to take your older frame and mount a new 3rd gen frame), but since doing so will change the serial number... I thought that wouldn't matter because this is a seized gun, not purchased by the department. The legal beagles said nope, can't do it.
My point here is, I think enough of the rail to buy another gun like one I have free use of because the 'free' gun is missing an accessory I find very useful.
YMMV...;)
I'm leaning toward getting the frame changed out. I work fugitive recovery and while searching a dark area of a house, it sure would be nice to have my left arm free.
Any suggestions on a light?
The StreamLight M3X is a proven unit. That's what I have.
SureFire has modified their X2000 unit with a "B" version that features a nice LED flood; the original "A" version was too much of a spot and would not illuminate an entire room. This is typical Surefire quality (and cost); but I do not like its switch. To me, the M3/M3X switch is hands-down the best. Still, I'm told that the "B" model has a fantastic beam that is much better than the incandescent beam of the M3X. Given how LED technology has skyrocketed in the past few years, I can well believe it.
Stay away from the Glock light unless it is the only one you can find.
