Well, I'm at the point where I am applying my first coat of tung oil to my K31. What methods have you guys found to work best?

I've heard of people rubbing it in very slowly, inch by inch. For the first coat, I just rubbed it on with a rag in about five minutes.

Should I lightly sand between coats? With 600 sandpaper?

Why do people sand between coats anyway?

Thanks,
Jason

Are you using pure tung oil, or the Formby stuff? Formby's is mostly varnish with very little tung oil.

If it were me, I'd use BLO.

I was told to sand between coats to smooth down any "stuff" that may get into the wet coat before it dries. Like dust in a paintjob. Is it necessary? I don't know, but I did it anyway, and got great results.

When putting the oil on, I just used a rag and wiped it down thoroughly. Hope it helps.
