But before I do, I want to know what I can "really" expect.

I'm looking at either Gemtec or AAC cans. Gemtec's site does not list decible reduction ratings, but I have found info on AAC cans.

Can someone tell me what I can expect with a -35dB rating? I mean, when shooting sub-sonic ammo, how loud will it actually be? Will it be less than a .22 short? Will I only be hearing the bolt cycle, or is it louder than that?

This thing will be more of a "novelty item" than anything else, but if I go through the trouble and money, I don't want to be disappointed with the actual degree of suppression that I obtain.

Lastly, I noticed the dB rating as "dry". How do I run "wet" and what are the benefits/drawbacks.

Thanks in advance.

I have heard an AAC can some years ago. It sounded just like an unsuppressed .22LR. Pretty cool, I thought.

You're not going to get hollywood quiet out of a centerfire rifle suppressor. The bullet breaking the sound barrier is pretty noisy. Another thing to note is that the gun typically sounds much louder to the shooter. Your face is right up against the stock where you can hear the action banging back and forth, and you hear the noise coming out of the ejection port. Stand 10 feet back and let your buddy shoot and it sounds much different.

Subsonic .223 would sound pretty good, but I don't know if any will reliably cycle the gun. You would be better off getting a .22LR conversion and shooting Aguila SSS. It is essentially doing the same thing as subsonic .223.

Generally speaking, "wet" cans are only in pistol calibers. liquid does not compress like gasses do. If you run a rifle can wet, you would likely have problems. My .223 can came with specific instructions that it would not be warrantied if I were to shoot it wet.

I thought the Gemtech warranty was voided if you shoot Aguila SSS through it because of its high tendency to tumble.

Here is a video (http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=14&t=254686) comparing the M42000 and Ranger. That should give you an idea of how well the sound is reduced.

Generally speaking for suppressors if you shell out the money you want to make it count so don't go cheap, used suppressors are hard to sell sometimes. Either the Gemtech or AAC are quality suppressors. Silencertests.com also has a whole write up about suppressors.

For the quietest gun you'll likely have to go with a bolt action .22lr and a good supperssor. The action cycling of a semi-auto tends to add to some of the noise.

A video will show you nothing in relations to quality of suppresion.

Shooting full powered .223 supersonic ammo is not going to make you happy if you have not heard it. You can shoot without hearing protection but you will not hide the fact that a gun has fired. Subsonic .223 that will cycle your gun will cost over $1/round. If you want to shoot quiet then move into a pistol caliber, 9-40-45 or go custom caliber like 300 whisper but expect over a dollar a round again.

Plus shooting .223 in an AR is going to dirty up the gun quickly and blow nasty amounts of gas into the face of the shooter. Shoot 100rnds through your gun and it will look like you shot 1000 rnds when it comes time to clean.

I would suggest you go something else firs time. If you do go .223 then get a screw on so you can cheaply put it onto 22lr handguns and rifles you will be happy with the quiet on those.

I suggest you go somewhere and get a demo on what silenced firearms sound like, before you buy something you have expected more out of. Learning what silencers sound like from movies is not the way.

Don't expect 35 dB.

What David said.

The same can be said about reloading subsonic .223, too. However, the Whisper was designed to be a subsonic rifle cartridge. The .223 was not. There are a lot of issues when it comes to sub- .223 that you will not have to deal with on the .300 Whisper.

You will not notice a difference between SWR and Gemtech's Bilock .223 can. That said, SWR will be slightly quieter. I cant speak for AAC since I've never heard one.

If you want to shoot subsonic, buy a .22LR can and make a .22 Upper seprate. Either can's are designed to be shot DRY, nothing is reccomended to be used in the GT or SWR can's.

Go find a dealer who can hook you up with someone who can demo a can for you. They will not be hollyweird quiet.

So far you are the one who is displaying the ignorance.

Nobody is or was talking about or advocating shooting anything in the " Brain or chest". Take your 10th grade crap somewhere else.

Thanks for crappin' on my thread folks!

FWIW, I've decided to pass on the suppressor. I may go all the way next year and get a Mac and suppress it. Who knows? For now, I've put about $1.2k into a new upper.

I was looking for a greater dB reduction; if I wanted to shoot a .22, then I'd do just that. Kinda hard to use an AR in the back yard with a school quite close by.

or if you build a straw bale and plastic shooting bay. such a container suppresses the sonic crack and ejection port pop of the 223 just fine.

I would suggest you visit this site:
http://www.silencertests.com/

and review the "Silencer Test Result." They go into excruciating detail testing these things, and I'd wanna check it out before I go buy one.

There's an AAC Evolution-9 heading my way soon.

i second this.
i have been kicking around a suppressor for my .223's but decided not to after talking with a few folks in the business. while a suppresed .223 will be quiter then un/s you will still hear the shot so will everyone else. not as loud but you will know a round was let off.
i'd go with a .22lr for starters. like i did. then a pistol caliber.
.45 is already subsonic so will you need is a can and a vehicle to deliver the round through.
while gemtech makes nice can's their .22 is not a Q baffle design so it will be somewhat louder then other one's on the market.
i have a Tac-65 from tactical innovations, next to the gemtech it's much quieter. not so with their centerfire cans vs. gt etc. before the tax stamp it cost me $300. dealer title tax etcetc.
it's 1/2-28 tpi so it works on a few different semi and bolt .22's.
after my sbr i'll do a few pistol caliber uppers. this way i'll have the conveinence of using the can on my ar conversions and pistols too.
Class II / title II toys ain't cheap but who cares.
btw
unlike regular firearms which can be sold on a whim if you decide to sell any of your NFA items it might take a few months to sell them off
