I was wondering if you guys had any experience with the russian Mosin-Nagant 1891/30 rifles they sell at big-5. They are selling them for $80.00. Im interested in buying one and im sot sure how to tell if its good or bad. Anything i need to look for or test? Any feed back would be appreciated. Thanks

Nothing more to look for then any other firearms I suppose. I basically check for function. Operate bolt, pull trigger and listen for the firing pin. Check barrel and thats about it.
You could ask them if they would let you test fire it in the parking lot......record the expression.

Their 91/30's are very rough in my expirience..
But the M44's they have are excellent so.

I got a 91/30 from Big 5 that was PRISTINE! It's a 1939 Izzy, not refurbished, blueing was 98%, bore looked perfect, wood was very good condition with slight flaking of shellac. All parts matched including bayo. It came with all the goodies too. I paid $79 plus dros, tax, etc.
Granted, I waited for about a year before I found the "right" one for me. When I took it to my gunsmith for a checkup, he said it appeared this rifle had never been fired at all exept maybe at the factory. There were no wear marks on the bolt or in the reciever etc. He said it looked brand new.
I refinished the stock with BLO etc and now I use it for hunting. I scoped it with an Interordiance reproduction PU sniper mount and a Burris 4x20 scope. Oh, and it shoots less than MOA at 100 yards with S&B 174gr BTHP ammo. I've done it many times in front of unbelievers who soon departed with petty cash.

That is a nice one! I found a 91/30 in like condition('43 Iz) at a show for $65, snatched it up of course!
Headspaced it on the spot before buying it with a field gauge.. I know they arn't accurate but it is in milspec so.
What was interesting is the guy wanted $90 for it but came down FAST when I expressed interest in it. Must've only been shot a few times by him, since there was a big ol' bur in the chamber, took shavings right off my brass.
