How do you remove the barrel of a MKIII, or MKII?

Hit it with a mallet -- preferably rubber. That's assuming you've removed the mainspring and bolt. Seriously, that's what Ruger recommends if the barrel is difficult to remove. I'd take steps to protect the crown.

It will usually loosen up some with use, and repeated cleanings, and can be removed by gripping tightly and sliding it to the rear. It only takes a fraction of an inch of movement to free it from the frame.

Removing the upper? What rdsharp said.

Removing the barrel from the upper? Gunsmith.

No, I'm good on removing the upper from the lower. In fact the MKII was the first pistol I ever took apart as a kid. I then had to take it to a gunsmith (in a bag) and ask that he put it back together. After that, I learned.

No, I'm gonna replace the barrel and 'jazz' up my MKIII. So I need to know how to get the barrel off of the upper.

What DML said: A gunsmith. Frankly, it would probably have been cheaper to start with a Volquartsen custom.

I thought the upper WAS the barrel?
