Yeah, I suggest that you save your money until you can afford something that you will be happy with.

My Tacpoint (Aimpoint knockoff) has so far survived over 1000 rds and a carbine class. It cost around $79. So as a cheep red dot I can reccomend it.
Note, you get what you pay for. Aimpoint is a far better quality and the battery life can't be beat by an aftermarket scope.
When I can afford an aimpoint, I'm getting one. And the 3x magnifier.
I picked up a used Tasco Propoint for ~$40. It held zero fine for simple plinking and squirrel duty. It depends on your needs. Preparing for world domination by aliens- save up and spend oodles of $$ on something nice. Paper puncher, buy a nice scope.
But since you're looking for a cheaper red dot or scope tells me this will be a primarily fun range gun/plinker.

I agree with save your money, and buy something of good quality, I have bought cheap optics before, and you get what you pay for, for the most part anyway.

The words "good" and "cheap" usually don't go together.;)

Im very happy with my two Tacpoints however I have no managed to scrounge up enough money to get an EOTech for my flat top. Not becuase I dont like my Tacpoint but I like the optics of the EOTechs better.
Soon there will be one for sale including the ARMS mount and spacer.
Out of curiosity, I took the $25 BSA red dot off my 10/22 and briefly put it on my AR. I say "briefly" because it lasted all of 20 rounds before the massive recoil ;f of my AR caused the red dot to fritz out in between shots. I saved my pennies and bought an EoTech.

How about the SPOT MKIII? It retails for about $149.00 with the mount.
Here's a review/torture test of the optic:

Or buy a used optic.
I currently have a used C-More Railway that purchased off the Equipment Exchange on ar15.com and it's been a great red dot.
Here's a pic of it w/ the YHM flip-up buis.
