I am noticing a disturbing trend about myself. If you have been following my posts, you may have noticed it as well. The bottom line is that, at some deep, psychological level, I have convinced myself that stock is boring and that I can't leave well enough alone. As an example, take a look at my Pointman Seven. It shot great out of the box and was scary accurate. By the time all was said and done, I tweaked it to within an inch of it's life, just to make it shoot the same. It sure looks good, though.....

Then there is my Kimber Compact 10mm. I have, literally, replaced every part on that gun except the slide, barrel (rechambered from .40 to 10mm), frame, and pins. The result is probably my favorite 10mm. Compact, portable, powerful and scary-accurate. Since these photos were taken, I have added Heinie sights, an Ed Brown grip safety, Ed Brown thumb safety, Videki trigger and EGW tool steel ignition parts. It is currently out having the front strap serrated and refinished.

So what does all of this rambling have to do with the price of tea in Walla-Walla? Well, I made the mistake of going to a gunshow last weekend. I wasn't looking for another 10mm. OK, that's a lie...my eyes are always open for another 10mm...but I wasn't actively LOOKING for another 10mm. Regardless, I found one. Actually, it kind of found me. After spending three or four hours strolling around the show, I ended up BSing with a guy who had a bunch of guns and reloading stuff on his table. I stopped because he had some 10mm brass up for grabs, but no 10mm guns. He asked me if I liked the 10mm, and I told him that "like" wasn't quite the right word. With a grin, he reached under the table and pulled out a Delta Elite.....an absolutely BUTT-UGLY, SCREWED UP, NASTY and oh so FUGLY Delta Elite! It's bad enough when Bubba gets his hands on a surplus Enfield or something, but WHY, for the love of GOD do they have to mess with one of Colt's finest?!? While I don't have any photos, this is the "custom" work that had been inflicted upon it: Millett tritium sights (crooked, tritium vials dead), S&A magwell (blended into the frame with a very coarse Dremel grinder leaving marks in the frame and edges so sharp that I actually cut myself and bled on the guy's table...no kidding), extended and checkered mag release, Brand X POS trigger, Wilson (I think) drop in beavertail grip safety, Brand X action parts (hammer followed when I dropped the slide), plastic "ivory" grips, extended slide stop and two-piece guide rod. Oh, and I forgot to mention the custom cold-blue finish that I could SMELL from four feet away. As I stood there, slack-jawed in utter disgust and amazement, the guy says, "Nice, huh? I just got that in trade for a stainless .357 Blackhawk."

It took me a few seconds to make sure he wasn't serious about it being "nice". I can appreciate subtle sarcasm. He let me tear it down and get a better look at the internals. With the exception of the obvious Bubba work, it really wasn't in all that bad of condition. Sure, it was ugly, but ugly is fixable. Barrel lock up was a little loose, and the lockwork was crap, but it had potential. The only part that concerned me was the Dremel work on the frame in the magwell. THAT might take some welding to correct. On a whim, I offered him a low-ball price that he wouldn't POSSIBLY accept. He took it. CRAP!!

OK, now I have a Delta Elite project gun. After I got it home and completely tore it down to the frame (talk about DIRTY!!)I made up a parts-needed list for Brownells. I will snap some pictures this weekend and post an update here. I have already done away with some of the ugly and tossed it in the trash, to include the sights, the grips, the mag release, trigger, the lock work and the S&A magwell. My desired end-state, at least at this point, is to have a functional Delta Elite that will have a slightly "retro" flavor to it. Given the state of the finish, I will probably end up with matte black Parkerizing. Or, if I get REALLY ambitious, I will rust blue it and nitre blue the pins and screws. Stay tuned...it's gonna get bumpy!

Well, pictures of the Bubbafied Delta are going to be a problem. My step-daughter took my digital camera to her Dad's for the weekend, and since my initial post, I have spent about 20 hours de-Bubbafying it and knocking the ugly off of it. If I got REAL ambitious, I could have it ready to shoot in about three more hours. Thus far, I have done the following:

-Removed the sights
-Fitted a GI National Match barrel bushing. The slide opening was so oversized that the bushing dropped in. I have fitted half a dozen of these things and I have NEVER had that happen before. Fitting the bushing to the barrel and lapping it into place took about an hour, with no power tools used in the process. (It's too easy to remove too much metal too quickly doing this with a Dremel tool.)
-Fitted a Videki long solid trigger
-Fitted a King's old-school Commander hammer and Colt tool-steel sear
-Fitted an Ed Brown thumb safety
-Installed an EGW oversized, square-bottomed firing pin stop
-Fitted a Les Baer mainspring housing, serrated at 20 lpi
-Replaced the mag catch with a Colt factory part
-Installed an Ed Brown hardcore slide stop.
-Installed a 25 pound mainspring, 22 pound recoil spring and XP firing pin spring
-Spent four hours cleaning up the Dremeled mess of the mag well. It's now pretty radically beveled. I still have some clean up work to do there, but it is LOTS better. That was the area I thought I would need some welding to correct.

Still to do:

-I am in the middle of fitting an old school Ed Brown pre-speedbump grip safety. I have the grip portion at a 98% solution with some file marks to polish out. I still have to contour the top of the grip safety to match the frame, and the back of the slide to match the overall contour.
-I have the sights ready to go, I just need to install them. I am using a Bomar ramped and serrated stake-on front with a Yost-Bonitz retro rear sight.
-I still have some overall contour, angle clean up and polishing to do, not to mention taking care of some sharp edges. From the factory, there are some angles on the frame (especially the trigger guard) that are pretty ugly. Five years ago, those wouldn't have bothered me, if I had noticed them at all. Now, they drive me nuts.
-I MIGHT tighten the slide to frame fit...the jury is still out on this one.
-I have to replace the grip screw bushings. When I took the grips off, I discovered that the grip screw bushings and been solidly staked in place and red Locktited. Normally, that wouldn't be a problem...except that Bubba had tried to remove them with the wrong sized screw driver and stripped the screw slots on three of the four bushings. I had to drill them out and grab them with vice grips to get them out. The threads in the frame seem to be OK. I guess I'll find out when I try to install the new bushings.
-When I have taken it as far as I can with the tools and skills I have on hand, I will take it to Dave Helton of DVCustom.com for finishing in a black Parkerizing. He also does a very good polymer finish over Parkerizing that I am considering. I also plan on having the front strap serrated at 20 lpi to match the mainspring housing.

When my step-daughter gets back this evening, I will try to snap some pictures of the work in progress. It's been a lot of fun so far, but DANG my hands are sore! ;f

Mossy, you are one sick and twisted individual. I like you. You are a 10mm-aholic and machine shop all in one, aren't you?

Can't wait for the pics.

BTW good choice on the Yost-Bonitz retro rear sight. I think if more people knew about them they would be as popular as Heinies.

Nick,

I have Yost retro sights on four different 1911s, and they are my favorite fixed rear, right up with Heinies. The good thing about the Yost sights (aside from a great sight picture) is that I can install them myself, with no machining. At this stage, if I can't do it with a file or a Dremel tool, it doesn't get done.

Here are a few pics I shot a few minutes ago. I am at a 98% solution mechanically, but I still have a ways to go finish-wise. The sides of the slide look silver because I polished off Bubba's cold blue. I took the lock work out because I was fitting the beavertail. I'm not sure how clear the pics will be on line, but if you look close enough, you can see the gouges from the grinding wheel in the magwell. I still have a little bit of clean up to do there, but it is looking better.
