I've been considering switching the stock guide rod and recoil spring in my G21 for a captured stainless steel with ISMI springs. I've no problem with it stock. It's been flawless. It's primarily a "fun gun" with occasional duty as a home defense weapon. Worth it, or just tinkering with "perfection" in my case?
It's just tinkering. If you wish to fool around, get an uncaptured rod.

Another vote for non captured. Easier to change setups and far more versatile.

Non-captured Aro-Tek rod(haven't heard of one breaking)and ISMI springs are hard to beat.
I have both captured and uncaptured guide rods. I like both. The captured has a better looking fit with you slide, and the uncaptured makes it easy to change springs. If you are planing to switch your springs weights often you should get the uncaptured guide rod. If your not planing to switch your springs; you should get the captured. The uncaptured guide rod will be a little lose on the end of you slide, while the captured will fit perfectly like your old stock guide rod.

Disbol,
The Aro-Tek non-captured and captured rods come with a bushing/washer that is to be used with the round wire springs like wolff, the washer isn't needed for the flat springs like the glock factory or ISMI springs,as the ID is in the neighborhood 0.255,the Aro-Tek rods are about 0.230,so the rod is quite stable at the end of the slide.Because the barrel and rod tilt when the slide is back,it's better to have a bit of play.

Thanks, folks. Ok, and I thought I was spending too much money on my photography habit...looks like I'm about to start tinkering in a new area now. Any partricular recommendations for spring weights? Bear in mind I'll be using factory ammo; predominantly American Eagle 230 gr fmj, and Hornady 200 gr. hp. Or is a variance of 100-200 fps in muzzle velocities a factor in choosing spring weight? Glocks. They're like potato chips. You cant' have just one, and there's all kinds of ways to dress them up.
