Other than the differences between the number of pins and the stupid grip ridges is there any differences between a 1st gen and a 3rd gen. I have noticed a few but I not sure if this is true of all 1st and 3rd gens

Things I have noticed but can not confirm.
The slide on the 1st gen feels tighter it does not rock side to side as much as the 3rd gen.

The gap between the frame and slide seems closer on the 1st gen

The finish looks very different.

The grip feels thinner

I have wondered this too...in particular whether they is any perceived difference in reliability between the first gen G17 and others... I have thought for awhile how I'd like to own a first gen one.

I know glock would probably never introduce them again, I would love to buy a brandnew 1st gen. I love the one my dad has, he never has got the factory upgrade, still in the tupperware box, with all the accessorys, and we just shoot the heck out of it. I love how it feels in my hand and how well I shoot with that, I like it better than my 34 that I had.

I just dont dig the finger grooves.

I own both a 1st Gen. AF7xx and a current 3rd Gen HFS5xx G17 and I can tell you my vote goes hands down for the new 3rd Gen. Here are the improvements, in my opinion, the 3rd has over the original

Captive recoil spring

Rust resistant internal small parts and S/N plate. The AF7xx S/N plate was rusty from service in Central America. Other small parts had light corrosion.

New finish on slide. I think it's superior to the parkerized type finish on my other 3 Glocks.

Drop free magazines

Loaded Chamber Indicator

Accessory rail

Finger grooves and checkering. Grab a wet 1st Gen to see how slick they become.

Smoother feed ramp from the factory.

Even more precision machining on the new 3rd Gen's parts. Check out the new ultra small assembly numbers on the slide and barrel.

There is a NIB gen 1 at the local gun shop. It's being sold for a lot less than the new ones. I may just get it....
