I have seen the mil surp MN m44 carbine rifles out for years and they are cheap enough and the ammo is cheap enough to justify another centerfire plinker seeing that I already have a 8mm mauser that I cut down to make a little more accurate(and it really worked to). I was wondering how accurate are mosin nagants? what can I expect if I got one of the short ones which I think I'm gonna get and finnaly make a scoped scout rifle out of it or whatever my brain feels the need for. Recoil is not a problem for me.
not too sure how far out you are trying to go, but with my unaltered m44's i put paper plates in serious peril at 100yds with no problem at all. that is when im standing.
im sure with a scope and from a bench you can go much more accurate.
the russians used the 91/30 mosin nagant as a sniper from WWII till 1974, so i have to imagine that some people feel the gun is accurate.
if you want a mosin that is exceptionally accurate without having to add a scope to it, then consider a m39 finnish mosin nagant. they have heavier barrels and beefier stocks. they are a bit more money, starting around $200. there is a guy at my shop that has a scoped one that he uses to hit targets out to 700 yds. since they are a bit more rare, it would be a shame to cut one of them up.

M44 IIRC shoot better with the bayonet in the "fixed" position.
its not necessarily that they are a better shooter in that position, its just that the russians sighted them in with the bayos in the fixed position.
if you decide to remove the bayo, after sighting it in, it should shoot as good as before.

Yeah, I shoot "ok" ;) I'm on the Ohio junior rifle team , as far as the bayonet goes well it will come off the rifle for good, I dont think ground hogs charge anymore these days.

Buy an M38 or M91/59 if you don't want the bayonet..

You may not have a problem with the recoil, but the scope might, unless it's a good one. Food for thought.
i second the m39 or m 91/59 suggestion

I go with fixed power bushnells all the time on centerfire rifles (cept on my .223 groundhog slayer) I have a fixed X4 on a garand that works nicely and dosnt beat your brow to bits.
