View Full Version : Putting my vari-x III on an AR. some ?s
Hey fellas(and ladies)
I am in the process of purchasing my first AR(excluding the oly arms plinker I had a couple years back, breifly). I saved some cash, and am in the process of buying the setup I wanted. Its a dpms rig with a 14.5 and a flattop. Currently, my budget, in its entirety, is going towards the rifle, which has no rear sight.
Well, our rifle season just ended and I wont be using my hunting rifle(rem M7 7mmSAUM) until late next summer. I was thinking of rigging up my vari-x III on the AR for the time being to do some target shooting and plinking.
Is this possible? what kind of mounts/rings do I need? Am I going to have to remove the front sight? Is that possible?
Obviously, this scope is overkill for this setup, but until I can afford an eotech or aimpoint, I think it will work alright.
Sorry for all of the newb questions, I hope to learn a lot from this rifle and enjoy many hours of shooting with it.
thanks for any info provided.

Don't mess (ie remove it) with the front sight if you can help it. I think the front sight is aligned from the factory to be accurate with the barrel, so if you mess with it, it could be a a PITA to re-align it.

I just got the high Leupold scope rings from Wal-Mart and put them on mine. Works great.

GoreLicks' rifle, above, is an example of one way to do it. I prefer my scope a little higher over the receiver, as the AR's stock is so little drop that a high scope is more comfortable to use.
You can go to extra high/super high rings, or use low/medium rings and a riser block or scout rail. The longer the scope, the more valuable an extended rail will be, as it allows you to mount the scope farther forward than rings-on-the-receiver would allow. Here's a picture of one of my ARs with a B-Square riser block and Burris Signature rings:

The scout rails work in the same manner as the riser block, but often extend out over the handguard to accept longer scopes without pushing them rearward due to ring spacing issues.

Where's the barrel?? It looks like a turtle.
What kind of scope is that? I'm going to put on some kind of 1-4x20 on the AR I'm putting together now. I'm thinking about a Weaver V series (?) or maybe a Burris FF2.

I've tried set-ups like that but fought eye relief. If you use the "nose to the charging handle" presentation, your eye will be right up tight to the rear of the scope. Check out Yankee Hill Machine. They make a rail adapter/extension that allows you to move the scope further toward the muzzle. I think it makes the rifle much more comfortable to shoot.

The LaRue SPR mount is far and away the best way to mount a magnified scope to a flat top AR. Pricey though.

I will wait and see what happens when I get the rifle(hopefully by the end of the week). Hopefully my local shop will have the parts to set me up. Otherwise, it will be some good ole hip shooting this weekend :D

The M4-type barrel is inside the full-length free-float tube; no way to toast yourself on the barrel with this one, and you can fully camo it without cooking anything when it gets hot.
Scope is a Leupold Vari-X II 1-4x with heavy duplex reticle. VERY fast on low power, enough for most any reasonable use of a 16" carbine when set on 4x. Not good for tiny varmints at long range, but great for calling/walking-up fox and coyotes at 0-200 yards. For hunting I use a nearly-flush-fitting 9-shot magazine.

I agree; that is the farthest to the rear I would mount a scope on an AR. If it was any larger, I would have put a scout rail on it to get it farther forward, but I find I can effectively use most scopes on an AR if the rear of the scope is flush with the rear of the charging handle. This one barely made it. :)

Yes, that setup is simply beautiful. How much did it run for the free float tube and all hardware? I will have a 14.5.
great looking weapon!

I have a dumb question. The Picatinny rail and the Weaver rail are slightly different right?
The upper is Picatinny right? Aren't rings usually Weaver? I went to Wal-Mart and got the Leupold high rings, can I just bolt them right onto the upper?
I may eventually get a swan sleeve and lower rings but the Leupolds will work for now and let me see how I like the height. I'm thinking I want a lower mount close to iron sights.

My leupold rings are mounted right onto the falt top upper. You can mount yours right onto the upper like mine.
