Stopped into my local FFL shop last Tuesday to pick up my turkey & antler mounts (my taxidermist’s son works there) & to grab a few boxes of slugs… well, while I was there I ended up buying this too :):

(Sorry about the pictures as they were taken on my FFL’s floor with their cheapo digital camera…)

As you can see it’s a Colt SP1 that’s been beat-up a bit (the pictures are actually a bit kind to its condition)… the guy who brought it in said that he’s the original owner as he purchased it NIB back in the 70’s… it’s all original except for the flash-hider & the inside shows that it's been fired fairly little, which was also what the owner claimed.

The 2 things that I’ve learned so far about this SP1 is that it originally came with an A1 flash-hider (already have an original A1 FH & A1 lock-washer on its way) & was manufactured in 1977…

The stock set is in ruff shape with the tri-fore-grips being in the worst condition… those have a few cracks & a missing section at the top vent holes.

Right now I’m planning to keep this AR as-is (IOW, no refinishing it look like it did when NIB) as the “worn look” fits it… I may end up replacing the tri-fore-grips though as they may be too far gone to keep them from falling apart totally. If I do, I plan on replacing them with an original set of used, but not broken tri-fore-grips… I may have found a guy with just those already… waiting to hear back from him.

I do plan on shooting this SP1… not a bunch, but some at least.

I guess now I need to place an order for some original “strait” 20-rounders… I have only one of those currently & everything else would be out of place!

Any comments or suggestions guys?

The only thing I can find wrong with it is the selector switch. It only moves 90 degrees instead of 180. ;f

Well, I was told if the internals were as good as I say they are then paying anything less then $900 is a good deal for its current condition.

My local FFL shop was planning on putting it out for $900 even if I decided to pass on it… we’ll just say that I didn’t pay $900 for it. ;)

LOL, agreed.

While it has a sense of "coolness" to it, well, let's just say I prefer the brass deflector and FA.

For me, that'd be a piece to fix up a hair, mount a bayonet on it, and hang it in my office for people to look at. Somewhat of an expensive wall ornament, though...

Mmmm. A classic beater AR. Once you get it fixed up and put an original FH on it, go ride it hard and put it away dirty.

If it's not pretty to look at, might as well use it.

While I want those features on my serious AR's, I don't see their benift for this one & its intended use. (IOW, I won't be shooting it left-handed to need a BD & won't be getting it hot/dirty enough to need a FA. ^c)

Now what fun would that be? :)

(I may have my fun with it for a while & then give it to my father-in-law if… it should bring back memories for him… hopefully the good ones.)

A local sportshop has an absolutely pristine SP-1 for $1599; Michigun's one can be made pretty presentable for a lot less; and the local one is underpriced by a couple hundred bucks. Even in 60% shape, an SP-1 worth every bit of $900.

R-guns (www.rguns.net) has NHMTG 20 rounders for $15 @, brand new.

Michigun, I PM'd you; it looks like great minds are in similar channels! Congrats and enjoy.

Must not be tempted...

I must not spend more money this year.

The rest of my AR budget this year is for ammo, an Eotech optic, and nothing else.

I've already added 2 ARs this year with an Aimpoint.

Damn money flies quick with BRD. ;g

Just an update guys…

Cleaned her up a bit, added an old original Colt A1 FH that a friend ended up having (Just happened to stumble on that one!) & added a used set of non-cracked/non-broken original Colt handguards.

I’m keeping her as-is now! (Well, except that I need to find a used (but not destroyed!) era original USGI sling for her & wait for the original surplus M7/M8 bayonet/sheath combo I just ordered to arrive. :))

Got mine from http://dsgarms.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=78 because they had used/issued (IOW, they had worn looking bayonet sets to go along with my worn looking SP1 ^c) M7/M8 combos. (Although they do have non-used/non-issued M7/M8’s available too.)

I also found a price at http://www.cdnninvestments.com/miscellaneous.html for non-used/non-issued M7/M8’s.

I like it. A classic, really.

I bought some bandoleers from Fred's, and they were stamped 1967. & pockets, each to hold two stripper clips of 10 rounds each. Kind of anachronistic with my M4gery, but I'm saving them in case I ever trip on a classic like yours.

(I actually got a chance to put a few mags through her this past Saturday afternoon (after the morning deer/muzzleloader hunt of course ;)) & she's GREAT! ZERO problems & that's even with using Wolf's cheap "polymer" 55-grain FMJ ammo (not the most accurate .223 round)... I was even able to get 8 rounds out of 20 on an old 2’ diameter aluminum Dish Network disk placed at the 300-yard mark… hey, give me a bit of a break as it took me a few rounds to figure out that the SP1 was shooting about a 1’ low & a hair more then a 1’ right. ;f)

the SP1 looks really nice now that you've ditched the retarded looking 5" FH. the 5" FH looks good on the carbines but looks silly on the SP1. i wouldn't mind picking up an SP1 as a reminder of my basic training days but so far i haven't found one in the price range i want to pay. i like the idea that you're keeping yours "as is" some firarms just look better with some wear and tear to them because it adds charecter. i have a M1 carbine with a stock thats beat to crap and a good amount of finish wear on the metal and while i could refinish the metal and buy a new stock the well worn look makes the rifle look like it's been through combat. take care of your new jewel and shoot safe.

Hey Michigun-

Was checking out the slickside upper/no mag release fence on your SP-1. What was the lower like on an A1? Was it smooth side like yours? There was some discussion elsewhere, but I can't remember or can't SEE much difference between the A1 and A2 lowers.

Are the bore/chamber chromed on that? Have you weighed it?

Did you change out the furniture before you took the recent pics? It is looking a lot nicer than the original shots. What a beaut.

Well, it was like mine in the very beginning... IOW, no "fence"... the “fence” was added later on… it’s pretty complicated really as there are several recognized variations of the A1 out there… IOW, you can find later A1’s with the “fence” & still have them be correct/original.

The addition of the “fence” was the biggest change to the lower is what I’m reading/seeing.

Yes, as mine was made in the late 70’s whereas the chrome was started in the mid to late 60’s. (Actually, my SP1 should have a “forward assist” from it’s manufacture date as that feature was added in the mid to late 60’s along with the chroming, A1 “birdcage” flash-hider & “trapdoor” stock (all features/changes made from the feedback obtained from Marines early on in Vietnam) … my SP1 has all of those “updates” except for the “forward assist”… Colt did some funny stuff early on with civilian AR-15’s as they had a bunch of parts lying around.)

I have not yet… I’ll try & remember to take it the next time I visit my local FFL shop… they’ve got a good scale there.

The only things I’ve done/changed on my SP1 is to replace the original broken/cracked tri-foregrips with a set of used Colt original unbroken/un-cracked tri-foregrips, swap out the incorrect FH that she came with for a Colt original A1 FH like it would have came with back in 1977, clean her up real good & add an original USGI OD sling… all of that was done prior to those last pictures.

That probably has more to do with the fact that I had a LOT better digital camera/lighting for these last pictures. ^c

Still fooling around about a sling; Fred's $25 policy has me off the track with him; he has too much M14 stuff, which I don't need.
Is your sling the same as an M14 sling? I have found some other listings for a green, nylon M14 sling, which I suspect is what was put on the A1.

Yeah, Fred's $25 deal had me looking elsewhere for a while, but I didn't have any luck, so I went ahead & ordered from Fred's... got 2 USGI slings, (I'd sell ya one for what I gave plus actual USPS shipping, but I purposely got the "used" ones & figure you'd want a like new one to go along with your new AR... shoot me a "PM" if you are interested, but I have to worn ya that the slings I have ARE used & a bit abused!) a "Repack" (the 7-pack) & ended up stumbling upon a "drum & fife" CD (LOVE that kind of stuff!) under their "Books & Manuals" section.

Ended up being happy as I didn't end up with a bunch of stuff I didn't want. ^c

I wanted to keep mine how it originally came from Colt so how she is right now is actually historically accurate… HOWEVER, if I wanted to make it into a historically accurate EARLY Vietnam era M16 clone it most DEFINITELY should have the 3-prong FH, it should also have a butt stock without the “trapdoor”!

FYI, if my SP1 had a forward assist it would be a historically accurate LATE Vietnam era M16 clone. IOW, my SP1 as she sits now would’ve been an “oddball”/parts gun M16 if you would’ve seen it in a soldier’s hands back then.

From the way I understand it, the M16 went right from the 3-prong FH, solid butt stock (i.e. no “trapdoor” for a cleaning kit) & no forward assist to having the A1 FH, the “trapdoor” butt stock & the forward assist on the very next A1 version… the shell deflector was added later yet. It didn’t take long for the new A1 version to replace the 1st M16 A1 in Vietnam.

Ah, Michigun, I just ended up and bit the bullet and ordered a sling and a cleaning kit for a buddy's M14; (Christmas present), all from Fred's Stock Emporium and Assorted Gunstuff Center.

I ordered the GI 'as new' strap; no specific rifle mentioned, so I hope it is the right thing. A green nylon strap looking a lot like yours in the photos is what I remember from the service.

Re: the three prong flash hider. Any way to know what came on yours originally, before the fugly carbine one? SP1s I've seen had the three prong, as did (at least some of) our M16-dash-nothings in basic. (At least I THINK so; our training ones were supposed to be really early, leaving the better/newer ones for the guys running thru the jungle. It has been a very long time, and what I was issued in my USNG unit was certainly an A1, mit birdcage, FA, and butt trap.)
I am told the three prong got caught in brush, encouraged the entry of rainwater, and was used by the troopies to break the steel banding on airdropped stuff (!). Always preferred the looks of the A1 birdcage myself.

Anyway, thanks for the info and the offer; Merry Christmas, and enjoy yer rifle. I think Santa came early; at least an SP1 wasn't too much of a burden in his sack!

Ah, Michigun, I just ended up and bit the bullet and ordered a sling and a cleaning kit for a buddy's M14; (Christmas present), all from Fred's Stock Emporium and Assorted Gunstuff Center.

Any way to know what came on yours originally, before the fugly carbine one?

Yup, check it out: (my SP1 was made in 1977 from its serial number)

I am told the three prong got caught in brush, encouraged the entry of rainwater, and was used by the troopies to break the steel banding on airdropped stuff (!).

My father-in-law was one of the 1st Maries into Vietnam... his complaints (Along with a LOT of other Marines!) about the very 1st M16's was what lead to the A1 FH replacing the 3-prong FH, the "trapdoor" butt stock w/cleaning kit installed replacing the "solid" butt stock, the addition of the forward assist & the addition of chrome lining.

Michigun-
The sling and cleaning kit put in an appearance today; Fred tossed in some targets as well.
The sling is as advertised; like new. The rattle in the sling hardware reminded me that we were advised to tape 'em up if we ever had to run thru' the jungle.
I think I recall a similar sling in nylon as what we were sometimes issued.
Anyway, I now have a pretty decent A1 replica right down to the sling. Thanks for the info, Merry Christmas, and keep your damn cold air up there. Here in Westsylvania, we're weary of it.

Moon

Actual yesterday at first light was -1*F; wind chill was -30*. Maybe I should ask you next-door-to-the-hosers folks for some WARM air...I'm going thru' firewood like Sherman thru' Georgia.
Anyway, wish it would moderate a while so that I can get the A1 replica to the range; the GI sling rattling along with the shivers wouldn't be any fun at all. ;)
Those targets that Fred tossed in look interesting, both for sight-in and offhand shooting. The GI ones we used for zero were the half humanoid looking things that became the same width as the front sight at 50 meters. The notion, of course, was a belt buckle hold sight picture that let us aim center mass all the way to 200 (I think) meters with pop-up targets. Fred's targets may well be the same as our old GI ones.
Don't know what they use nowdays with scoped ARs, but the GI ones worked great with period irons.
Time to throw another log on the fire.
Best,
Moon

Yeah, I was out bow hunting in that... I just added a pair of socks & a t-shirt to my normal cold weather dress. ^c

Fjestad sez $1850 for a hundred percenter; even in 60% shape it's worth $1K.
Whether it suits anyone else's fancy or not, Michigun didn't get hurt too badly on the deal. ;)
BTW, prices on such things seem to be climbing.
You either like retro ARs...or you don't.
