View Full Version : MN38 or M44?
Which should I get? (I know, BOTH!), but for now, which one first?
Pro's - Con's to each?

I prefer the M38, simply because I dislike the side-folding bayonet.
Not much call for a bayonet at the gun range anyway, eh?
Just to add confusion...
You might consider a 91/59. I was trying to make up my mind just like you are, and I found a nice 91/59. I really love mine.
But given the choice between the 38 and the 44, I'd pick the 38. I have little use for a bayonnet.

If I am not mistaken the M38 and M44 are the same rifles except for the bayonet. So all you have to do is ask yourself, do you want a bayonet or not?
I have a M38 and M44 but I like the 91/30 better than either of the other two. I have two 91/30's. A round receiver 91/30 and a hex receiver 91/30.

I ended up getting an M44 first, just 'cause it looks cool.
theres only one country that made the m38, 5 countries made the m44

Own both. Hard decision but I like the 38 because its more streamlined with the bayo and lighter but then the bayo is cool and functional if ever charged by a wild animal when bullets are gone.
Get one of each.
ill have to side with the guy that reccomeded the 91/59 (if you can find one) allan has had them but his list is gone, he does have more though. i would definatly get one when they pop back up, you can get one for under $150 and it would be a far superior shooter and collector compared to the 39 or 44 wich should be around in abundance for years to come.
91/30 and 38's are drying up from what I hear .
It's down to one importer now.And prices have climbed from $10.00 to $20.00 a gun.
I would get a nice 38 now and you should still be able to get the 44 later. The "folding toothpick" comes right off the 44. so just box it up and enjoy the gun.

I like both but currently have the 38 and take mine out hunting from time to time and like the fact the 38 is a tad lighter. Here is a pic of a fawn I took this past monday with my 38 . Now b4 I get heat for shooting a button buck I truley thought it was an adult doe when I shot it. As a side note Wolf 180 grain soft point really made a mess of the little guy.
Yep that's a bullet hole alright.
Same reason I don't use 454 CaSull rounds.I just load hot 45 colt rounds.
BUT I'm looking forward to hunting this or next year with my ex sniper 91/30.And the Wolf SP is the only cheap round that works so that's my round.

S&B makes a soft point load but it runs around 13 to 14 bucks a box when I am lucky to even find it. The Wolf soft point runs around 5 to 7 bucks a box . I really think the Wolf 7.62x54mm is just as good as the S&B and alot cheaper.
