View Full Version : K98 disassemby question
So I bought a russian capture k98 last week. I picked it up for what I thought was a good price of 165 dollars. In any case, I have stripped all of the parts off of the gun except for a few metal pieces on the stock. Before I go and break something, what is the proper procedure for removing the bayonet lug (just punch the pin out?), the metal discs on the butt end of the stock (no clue), and the half bolt looking thing in the front of the action area (no clue also). Thanks for your help, I want to refinish the stock because it has a very nice grain and the finish is kind of weird. It's like two different hues, the front is black-ish and the buttstock is red-ish.

To the best of my knowledge, the bayont lug and cap are held on with a cross-pin, but removing it will make it loose once you put it back on; the bolt disassembly discs shouldn't come out, and I'm not sure which piece you're talking about with the "half-bolt" doodad. (?) You should be able to refinish the stock without removing much of the metal.

I believe CanadianGlockFan is right. These instructions don't show any of what you want to do:

I have it broken down a little bit more than that tutorial/guide. If you look at figure 5, that bolt thing is in the picture in the middle of the wood directly under the screwdriver. So you recommend leaving those metal pieces on while striping the wood of all its finish?

DO NOT REMOVE THE DISCS IN THE STOCK!!
I have read this over and over on Mauser boards.
Here are a couple of web sites that will help you. I read them before I bought my K98k.
Collecting and Shooting the German Mauser 98k (http://www.surplusrifle.com/mauser98k/index.asp)
The Mauser Shooting Association (http://www.mausershooters.org)
Thanks for that mauser shooting association site Steve. I started on stripping the stock this morning, and so far it is turning out pretty well. My only refinishing experience is with wooden chairs; I figured it shouldn't be too far off for doing a rifle stock. Thanks for all of the help everyone.
