View Full Version : SBR Question

When filling out the form and it asks for barrel length do you put the shortest possible barrel you might use (ex: 7.5") and then could you use a longer barrel (10.5) or are you stuck with only the 7.5"?
Maybe a dumb question but I have the Lower Receiver on the way and I need to know what my options are before I send the paperwork in.
Is there a way to list the possible combinations I might use on that lower including 16" and above or am I limited to SBR barrels?
Thanks for the help, FH

Assuming the AR15 type weapon. Pick a caliber, length of barrel, length overall.
Then in other description put text explaining that this receiver will be assembled in multiple barrel lengths from 10-14/5" and in calibers ranging from 22.r to 45acp.
Get creative with the text and describe all configurations you might go for.

Thanks for the info.
I had not thought about the other calibers!
When you figure overall length do you measure with stock at shortest position (this is what makes sense) or longest?
Thanks again, FH

On another - just doesn't make sense - note:
Why is there so many hoops to jump thru for a SBR AR15 when you can build a pistol AR just by getting a receiver that is designated for pistol?
Seems like the pistol AR is even shorter than the SBR in the shortest config.
Just don't understand???

From what I've read, originally the NFA was going to regulate pistols as title II firearms, but that part of the law was removed from the bill before it was passed.

Because one is a pistol and one is a rifle. Pistols are not regulated by NFA but short rifles are.

Also you could not put a shoulder stock on a pistol!!

Would it make sense to get an SBR stamp and an AOW stamp on an AR Pistol Lower then you caould have every imaginable combination from pistol to SBR to carbine with or without VG on any of the above?
Or am I just wasting money by the AOW stamp for the one or two times I might leave a VG on the pistol config.
Durn, I got BRD baddddddddddd, and I haven't even built the first one yet (2 Stag Lowers on order right now - one rifle, one pistol!)
Thanks for all the advice, FH

As a short rifle it can be configured as a pistol without a buttstock, rifles are not regulated from having front grips. So as a short rifle with no buttstock it could have the vertical front grip.
The only the the AOW registration would come into play is if you wanted this short rifle to functionally fire from within a concealed briefcase type thing. A rifle can not do that but an AOW can.

I have heard that lately the BATF has become much more strict and is kicking out paperwork that is open ended on the firearms specifics. If you go over to AR15.com there is a lot of discussion about this.
It seems that they really want a specific calibre and barrel size listed or your paperwork gets delayed.
An SBR can have stock, no stock, barrel under 16" front grip any combination of the above. an AOW is specifically for smooth bore applications and oddities such as was specified with the briefcase gun or pen gun.
