I use Wolf 180gr. copper FMJ steel case. At the defence range of 21feet (7yards) they hit the same as my personal protection loads.
I am going to take my foot out of my mouth on this one....Yesterday I bought another box (250rd's)@ Wal-Mart for $40.00 and the stuff shot great! Not a single problem. Winchester's white box 180gr fmj also great and @ $15.00 per 100rds at Wal-Mart you can"t go wrong. Now for my home-pro and carry round, Win's LE Ranger 40T 180gr handles the job perfectly!
Walther P99 QA 40S&W purchased on 10/22/05 to date has 1550rds.
No problems, No error's. 100% functioning reliability!
I had the same issue with my P99 40. I have tried the following makers: American Eagle, Ramington, Winchester, UMC, Wolf, CCI. Of all these the best shooting load was the Winchester White box 180 grain loading. I have put 460 rounds through my P99 since buying it after Thanksgiving and the only hicupps it gave me were with the Wolf ammo. The lacquer coated steel rounds would not feed reliably. I think they were too sticky. I had a hard time loading the mags to being with. Have not tried the brass Wolf ammo to see. I shot the UMC value pack this weekedn and thuogh I was gonna have to give it away as my groupd really opened up form the WWB. I took a break and then went back at it with decent results. i will try again as its pretty cheap and shot rather clean. FYI, Natchez has WWB 180 grainers on sale for 8.50/box. I have also seen cases at gunshows for good prices. We have one coming up so I will try to get good pricing. CCI Blazer also shot well for me, especially in the 180 gr. loading.

I carry the Win Ranger Ts in 165 grain, so I use the WWB 165 as my practise load.
$22 a box for the rangers isn't bad, it's not great either though. I think last time I bought some I got them for around $17, cheapest I've found is around $13 though.
Heavy Hittin 40cal loads...buy'em & try'em and let me know if there good or great.

If you have time look at this thread and see if you have any information you can share. I need to be educated on what makes +p and what to look for for the best most accurate hard hitting bullet.
