View Full Version : SKS Sporter?
Just siting here looking at a Yugo SKS I bought for a really good price. The idea running through my head at the moment is to strip off the grenade launcher and bayonet mount and make a short sporter/truck gun out of it. After handling and looking at the synthetic stocks on the market I have decided I really don't care for them. My question is two fold: How short can I take the barrel back (I know 16.25 is the limit) and not have cycling problems and who makes a nice wood replacement stock that takes little or no fitting? My objection with most of the synthetic stocks is that most of them are too bulky and do little to enhance the lines of the rifle.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Anyone? I can't believe someone hasn't experimented with one of these!

Roy ,
I shortened my yugo back to the sight, and removed the bayonete mount.irecrowned it & added a ramline stock. it will hit a bowling pin 9 of 10 at 85 yds.

Thats part of what I plan on doing/ The stock is what has me stumped though. I really woul like a wood stock but I've so far been unable to find one. I plan on shortening the barrel and adding a brake of some kind. Just haven't decided which one. As I have access to a lathe I just might have a try at a custom one. Since you shortened yours do you have any idea how to remove the grenade launcher? Is it pinned on or is it threaded on? I'd like to know before I start beating on it and mess up the barrel.

the GL is threaded on and secured with a pin, Its not going to come off in a hurry I already tried. I just got my yugo about 3 weeks ago. I have 2 extra wood stocks for it I got them for next to nothing. I plan on doing some cosmetic work on one and a camo job to suit me. as far as the GL goes mine is gonna stay on till I really feel the need to chop it off. Or make the GL into a brake just cut chunks out of it and If you mess it up or it doenst turn out how you want it then cut it off. I really like the yugos cause you can cut off the gas and turn it into a straight pull rifle. (I sorta dislike semi autos yet I love them)
I kinda figured that it was attached like you described. I could live with the GL but I kinda like the looks of the rifle without it. I've got my eye on Yugo that was issued without the GL. I can't remember the model number right now. The stock is what has me sumped right now. I'd like a sporter in wood that's a little longer than the issue stock with a little more meat in the wrist area as I have a long fingered hand. I haven't tried Boyds yet but I'd probably have to shell out more for the stock than I paid for the rifle itself!
