I just field stripped my 1911 for the first time a few days ago. Now that I've got it all back together I'm wondering if there's a simple way to determine whether, when re-inserting the slide stop, I managed to get it into the barrel link or not.
Sure, I could dissamble and reassemble it again, but given how compulsive I am, I'd end up doing this 100 times and never really be sure I got it.
So, once the pistol is compeltely reassembled, is there any way to tell?

I can see mine through the hole ,give it a shake, if setting it in position before you slide it on won't work. Push the slide stop in halfway and move the slide, to see if your in.

If I understand correctly you are asking for a way to tell if the BBL is locked into place when reinserting the slide stop, if that is the case - insert your link, lock back the slide, with your strong hand grab the top of the slide and part of the frame with force and with your weak hand tug on the exposed bbl, trust me you will know if it is not locked. Only do this before you install your spring and cap - this way you won't risk the latch tripping and pinching your hand if you haven't hit the link. If for some reason you missed the linkage, the bbl will slide back and forth in the slide, if you did it right it should only move 1/8 of an inch or so.
I hope this helps. Someone may have a better way, but this works for me and only takes a second or two.
If you missed the link, the slide will slide right off the front of the frame as if the slide stop wasn't there at all.
I would be very difficult to put the gun back together fully if you missed because as you are trying to put the recoil plug back in place, the slide would try to come off the front of the frame with no resistance.
Hope I understood your question correctly.

I go by sight; then feel. insert the pin without the slide. it seems a tad loose and easy. Now try it with the slide on and add the pin. I also look in the hole and can see the ring inside moving around.
It isnt difficult once you play with it a bit.
