People have been telling me that you can now buy 10 rd standard 1911 mags,i have seen 8 rd mags galore.but are these 10 rd ones they are talking about for the hi-cap 1911 models or will they work with a standard 1911 gun...?

I don't know of any standard 1911 that comes with a 10 round mag. There are plenty of after market 10 round mags out there made by just about every one and you can find them just about any where.

They are more than likely talking about these:

They will fit in your Gov't model - but they will extend 1 to 2 inches below the mag well - I also know that some will give you issues due to the bumper pad at the base of the mag - if you over insert on some models, the gun will fail to battery -nif too short you have mag droppage during firing - I recommend the Wlson mags if you do decide to go this route - the plastic one piece follower helps with feeding and the magwell stop is welded to the mag body - the others typically use a plastic skirt type which can get wore out easy and will cause the problems I listed above. Stay away from the products listed as Double Stack which is how they refer to the high capacity "built" guns like the para for instance.
