This is the first fully installed linux os I've had, the rest were all on livecd. Can anyone familiar with linux and ubuntu in particular recommend good places to download software? The synaptic thing doesn't return very much. Also what would be good linux books that aren't so obscure I couldn't find them at a borders or books a million or something similar. thanks

Ubuntu should have just about every Linux program available.Enable synaptic and check out apt-get.Most Debian packages should work.

PLF is a very easy way of adding just about any software.A lot of third party software available through there.
