View Full Version : problem with S&W 1911....need some help
I recently acquired a S&W 1911, but after a short range session to test feed and function, I encountered a couple of problems: First, I frequently (read: almost every mag) had a failure to chamber the first round completely. Second, I had similar failures mid-magazine. It appears that the round is not being allowed to fully slide up the breach face by the external extractor. Seems like it may be an over-tension issue. Before I go cutting off coils or anything, I thought I would check with those who may be knowledgeable with the S&W external extractor design.

I have not seen any information about "tuning" these mutations. I'd call S&W and let them figure it out.

what king of ammo? mags??
Wilson mags....variety of ammo. Both mags and ammo work in three other 1911's. However, the ammo is reloaded. OAL is perfect and only jacketed bullets are used (no SWC's), but the ammo is just over major power factor and is not as hot as factory ball. I'm guessing factory ball may just have enough oomph to chamber it, but haven't checked yet. I don't shoot factory ball (I shoot major power factor to compete in USPSA), so I've got to get this thing to work with 165 PF rounds.

try non-reloads before you get to excited, your chamber might not like reloads..........it happens

Sorry, but you really should not test the functioning or reliability of a firearm with reloads. S&W 1911s have a great track record for the few years they've been available. I would re-test with factory ammo. If the problem persists, take advantage of S&Ws warranty service. Also, you should number your magazines as a means of determining if a problem is traceable to a specific magazine.
Almost certain it is your reloads. The chamber is a little tight for that load so use more crimp on your reloads or shoot factory loads.
Thanks, I'll try more crimp. I'm shooting this pistol in USPSA competition, so the use of reloads is required for me.
I should have said to also drop a few rounds into the chamber to make sure they are not oversized. Good luck.
