I took the plunge at the local gun show over the weekend and finally found a sks that I liked at a price that I really liked. Yugo SKS for $73.56. I picked this one out cause it still had a crisp barrel. I have cleaned it up and taking it down to the major groups but I cant seem to get the trigger group back into the stock. the little "finger" that hooks into the rear doesnt want to go all the way in so its just kinda sitting on my basement table in parts now. Also as far as the gas cutoff is concerned does the little button hafta be all the way back? or what? I have the gas system out and I was thinking about cutting off the gas system and filling the barrel with cleaner for a few hours so I dont get leakage.? Has anybody ever taken off the grenade launcher? I know they are "permanent" but a hammer and a hacksaw says otherwise ;)

Putting the trigger group back in is a PITA! But you just have to use some muscle.
I don't have my SKS with me right now, but doesn't the button for the gas system be all the way to the side in order for the gas system to work properly? You shouldn't have leakage in your gas system unless there is substancial corrosion in there and if your barrel is in great shape I'd think your gas system should be fine.
I permenantly removed my GL. I used a table saw to cut it, file to even it out, and I used valve grinding compound and a marble to creat the crown.

Yeah, dumb me I forgot the safety had to be on to get the trigger group back in, it was a peice of cake after that. Just out of curiosity how is the grenade launcher attached?

It's got a pin and threading. I knocked the pin out and tried unscrewing the GL but it didn't come easily. I could have got a pipe wrench and got it off like that and installed a muzzle brake, but I decided I didn't want the extra weight and size.

Is it threaded at the little collet in front of the sight or is it threaded just at the actual launcher tube? OR are both threaded?

I'm not sure what you mean but the only threading I know of is on the barrel where the GL and the barrel come together. I never actually got mine off so I never saw it though.
To make it easier to put the trigger group in I read that you can use clamps with the rubber ends on them. I have tried this on a few of my rifles and it works like a champ and it does not damage the gun.

My gun is kinda tight but I can put it together and take it apart with only the punch I didnt need a hammer or anything after the first few times. I picked up 2 extra stocks for it at a show today for $2 brand spanking new so I might tinker with a few camo or finish stains I have always wanted to do
